ORVIUS TOWERS
Remnants of the oryon
The Orvius towers inhabit a realm between realms: the Void. Once colonial fortresses--hubs of commerce and culture--they were built by a futuristic descendant of humans known as the Oryon, but are now derelicts and empty; preserved for all eternity in a space that does not age, nor rots, nor decays. Many of them are rumored to contain remnants of an ancient plague known as the Infestation, but few have ever returned from ventures inside.
Orvius towers are constructed from materials whose recipes and methods of manufacture have long since vanished from the cosmos. They are grand structures designed with their creator's eyes for oppulence in mind; everything appears to be in perfect harmony: the walls, arches, and corridors all speak volumes to the uniformity that society in the towers enforced.
High, vaulted ceilings served not only to be appealing to the eye, but to also keep inhabitants from feeling closed in or claustraphobic inside the towers. Every plant inside the towers is a ghostly blueish-white, and glows to alleviate strain on the central power system. In some towers, they might be the only source of light adventurers have.
Little is known about how the towers have remained operational. The power remains on and fully functioning, and automated drones float about the empty hallways idly--patrolling for intruders or familiars. Not much is known about the defense capabilities of the stations, though those that have survived adventures say there are automated sentry turrets, radiation lasers, and an assortment of traps and puzzles inside the lower levels of the towers; as of yet, it is unknown what lies beyond the first several levels.
The Infestation is a plague long forgotten to most universes. Little exists in extant databases about its exact nature; whether it is bacterial, viral, or some form of parasite remains a mystery, as does its exact method of transmission. What is known is that it mutates the host into an unrecognizeable form--monstrous in appearance--and that it erodes their resistance to its influence almost immediately upon infection. The places with the largest concentrations of The Infestation are usually places where fissures that lead into the Void are common--they are abundant in the Orvius towers as a result of their location inside the Void.
