「A firm commanding tone....」 "Hey Evelyn. Pick up the phone I know you're there. We haven't heard from you for too long. People are starting to worry. I'm starting to worry. How long are you gonna stay cooped up?"
「Changes to a more gentle one with genuine concern.」 "Anyhow I'm going to stop by this afternoon. I've been given a key so I'll let myself in if you don't answer the door. I'm bringing a lunch with me. I'm guessing you haven't been out to buy food for yourself much. Call me back if there's anything you have a taste for. You know the number.

When the afternoon rolls around there's a knock on the door. Kohaku knows she can get in with ease, but she waits to see if Evelyn will actually come to the door first. The usually regal woman is not dressing fancy today. She has put some effort into making her appearance less intimidating than normal, dropping a few inches in apparent height, wearing a casual dress, leggings and a fluffy jacket fit for the autumn weather. She carries an orange insulated bag, storing whatever food she has made as she waits quietly to see if there will be an answer.

She heard the phone--she always did when it rang--but she let it ring...and ring...and ring until it had timed out. The voice mail message played as soon as whoever tried to call had finished recording it, but she didn't seem to notice or care...not immediately anyways. It had been two months since she had been broken out of Sanctuary's very own "Ministry of Love"--a nickname for one of the agencies that fell under their Department of the Interior--but it was by no means a lovely place. Plain, stainless steel and concrete everywhere--it was a place meant to "soften up" dissidents before they were re-educated into hating all things magical and fantastical; Evelyn herself had been about halfway through the process before Edenites got her out...though, the exact location of the safe house was a mystery.
Any time she closed her eyes, it seemed like all she could see was being in that damned chair--light shining in her eyes, the whine of the dental drill in her ears. She hadn't slept well since she had been freed, and had an odd case of selective amnesia--a side affect of the incomplete memory replacement, no doubt.
Hours later, there was a knock on the door...who was it that was coming by again? She hadn't paid attention, but it really didn't matter too much in the end; she hadn't showered, and, even though she didn't have much in terms of possessions, the shoebox she had been dumped in was a mess...
Sitting up on the bed, she grabbed the pack of cigarettes off the side table and pulled one out--a casual smoker before, it was almost compulsive now...even the most basic of human contact had become stressful. She fumbled around for the lighter, and put the flame to the end of the tobacco stick as soon as she had found it. "Door's open," she said.

Indeed the door was open. It wasn't the smartest thing in the world to leave it unlocked like this, but no harm done this once.
Kohaku pushed it open only to be assailed by the smell. It wasn't merely of unwashed human either. Trash who knew how old littered the floor, some of it having never made it into the bin. The smell of cigarettes seemed to seep from the walls, and food from unwashed dishes grew rotten in the sink. Kohaku stepped in, ignoring most of the mess. She only payed attention to a space on the counter, which she cleared in order to set the bag of food down.
Only then did she glance at Evelyn. It was no surprise that was unkempt. It looked like the photographer hadn't slept well in ages, nor showered nor bothered with anything of her appearance.
Well if that had any bearing on the younger adult's mental state, Kohaku had her work cut out for her. "How long has it been since you've been out of the house?" The yokai asked, as she turned to try and make some order in this place. She at least ought to find some clean dishes since she had bothered to bring food. This whole place could use a brutal scrubbing lest it stay an infection waiting to happen, but that could wait for now.

The apartment was filthy, but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. There was garbage piled next to the bin, dishes in the sink from the week before and perhaps older, and a horrendous odor of cigarettes and mold—that much spoke to its occupant’s mental state, but what wasn’t there was also clear. While a thorough cleansing was in order to purge the smell of ash and tobacco, it wasn’t months worth of trash and grime littering the small apartment, but only about three weeks—even in her wretched state, there was still some innate limit to how long she could stand wallowing in the physical results of her ‘treatment’.
’How long has it been since you’ve been out of the house?’ the other woman had asked.
A hacking cough came from the former reporter, sitting up on the bed on the other side of the room. “Probably a couple weeks,” she said hoarsely. Evelyn noticed the yokai clearing a place off at the counter; about to ask what it was for, she then remembered that the voice mail had mentioned something about bringing over food. As if to remind her that she hadn’t eaten since the previous morning, her stomach made an unpleasant growl.

"shame, the weather's not been too bad. could have been a good time to photoshoot." Was Evelyn even still interested in that? Hopefully.
The span of time spent indoors could have been worse, though the estimate wasn't encouraging. Evelyn could have been after something as simple as getting smokes. She finally found some clean dishes, some shallow bowls that looked good enough for the food she'd brought so she took them out from their hiding place in a cabinet. Even in there smelled pretty musty. At lest these dishes weren't dusty. She set them aside and brought out a deep glass dish with a plastic lid. It was a hot casserole dish that overrode some of the unpleasant scents in the room and mixed sickeningly with others as soon as she opened the lid.
Hopefully Evelyn was nose-dead enough, or hungry enough to not care As kohaku took utensils she'd found, and began serving a helping. "Do you want to eat sitting on the bed, or would you mind clearing some table space?" The yokai asked, hoping to prompt a little more action from Evelyn, and give the girl some control of the choice. evelyn

Even if she had still been interested in photography at that point in time, she hadn't camera nor film with which to practice her craft. The only reply that the yokai received to the comment was a long, silent drag from the cigarette--clearly, it was a subject she didn't want brought up then and there.
Chinese food and smokes--that's what she had been out for. Though the cartons were buried under other pieces of mundane trash--wads of paper, a few plastic bags, and such--she had gotten orange chicken and rice, a staple when she had been in college. It had been cheap, and didn't taste half as bad as she had expected it to; however, a hole in one of her wisdom teeth--courtesy of Sanctuary's government--prevented her from enjoying much of anything these days. That said, she hadn't eaten in a day, and free food had been offered--as much as it physically pained her to do so, she needed something in her stomach. The smell didn't seem to phase Evelyn; the new smell simply mixed in with the rest of the room, adding yet another layer to its unpleasant odor.
She snuffed the cigarette on the ash tray sitting in the windowsill before getting up. There wasn't much in the way of space inside the shoe box of an apartment--it was meant for one person, and did poorly at housing even that. While clearing off a bit more space on the counter, she asked, "What's for lunch?"

No comment about photoshooting? The apparent lack of interest in what should have been an enjoyable activity was concerning, but that could be addressed at another time. More immediate matters needed attention.
"Its a variation on shepherd's pie. I think you'll like it." The woman answered regarding what happened to be for lunch. There were chunks of savory meat and vegetables bound by a 'crust' of lightly browned mashed potatoes. It could be eaten as easily with a spoon as it could be with a fork. The serving Kohaku dished out for Evelyn was generous, but hopefully not too much. The yokai closed up the dish to keep the heat in, and brought the steaming bowls to the newly cleared counter space. Since the apartment was outfitted for one, there were not many chairs but what there was was sufficient for this.
Kohaku gestured for Evelyn to sit and make herself comfortable now. Any other preparations, the yokai could take care of.

Shepherd's pie, huh? It wasn't often the young woman saw English food anywhere, but the "pie" of mashed potatoes and savory goods had familiar enough components that it couldn't be all that bad. Nodding graciously, Evelyn took a seat as instructed and took a testing spoonful of the meat and potatoes. It was a bit bland, in all honesty, though she chalked it up to the fact that she'd been smoking a lot recently--everything tasted like cheap tobacco and menthol as of late. Nevertheless, it was better than take-out, and she wasn't about to complain about cooking when she could hardly bring herself to do much more than make a pot of mac and cheese on a good day; had she been in a better way, she might've actually enjoyed it--but, for the moment, she ate without comment and purely for the utility of food in keeping her alive.
"So...what's on the agenda today, doc?" she asked.

How quickly she became 'doc' and she hadn't even been trying to make more than an assessment yet.
"The agendas on you. Are there any matters you'd like to discuss off the bat?" Ultimately Evelyn would benefit from feeling like she had some control over the pace. Anything Evelyn felt willing to talk about would be more productive than the short answer pattern that had started to develop.
