❖ MALIK YOUNG
The dense cotton weave of a loose tunic and simple pants. did little to protect from the cool night air that prickled against his skin. The sight which had drawn him out barefoot into the grounds of the mansion-castle loomed high above.
Malik had never seen so many stars.
In sanctuary light pollution hid all but the brightest. Here the only lights with the potential to dim the view of the stars were the warm glow from some of the windows in the manor he had just left, and his own.
While invisible under the light of the day or just good internal lighting, outside at night the youth was instantly brighter than most of his surroundings. At least his was a gentle light, far dimmer than the accidental brilliance which his host had witnessed of him when they had crossed paths in Eden.
He couldn't pass for human here. The magic in the air was so thick, and Malik so unused to its presence that just existing in Eokia had been taxing until he had allowed his energy to abate the sensation. The side effects to his appearance and strength were fortunately not overwhelming. He just couldn't fool anyone by claiming to be the race he had grown up believing himself to be.
Thankfully sanctuary was not here. There were no drones in the sky or hidden electronics poised to alert sanctuary the instant he powers were used. He was on the estate of one be knew, a man who's prestige dissuaded any near who might mean harm to a newcomer such as himself who knew not the local languages nor the ways of the people. The staff seemed well adjusted to the eccentricities of the lord they served, and by extension did not give an odd guest trouble. The only one of the old dangers left was the trap of his own thoughts, and for now those were not a problem.
His thoughts were stilled to awe by the stars. They were so many in number that he could not tell where one constellation began and another ended. They were not all white as well. Malik could see an incredible amount of color in the bright pinpricks of light and the sky itself. He had not even fathomed the night sky could be this brilliant. Some of the colors he could see were even beyond his ability to name. Maximillion B. VonMitternacht
