The branch popped in two, the ground falling out from underneath them.
The bat was already flapping her wings, although it would be a close call. She fell past the smaller beast, barely managing to keep herself from hitting the branch-addled ground. A flicker of movement in front of her resulted in a split-second reaction that only a bat could make with such ease.
For her species she had a relatively long and flexible uropatagium--the membrane between a bat's legs--in a manner that was more befitting of a moth-catcher than a fruit-eater. The bat flung herself backwards, curling that membrane into a cup shape in the hopes of catching the critter, either slowing its descent or scooping it up towards her furry chest.

She didn't mind hitting the ground. Having something else touching her, even in rescue however wouldn't do.
The struggle was instant, like the flip of a switch, teeth and claws frantically grappling with every bit of membrane that shire could find.
The poor bat didn't deserve it, but to Shiren, the contact was still not okay.
She didn't stop flailing for a few moments after she rolled onto the ground.

Her tail membrane was met by a number of bites and scratches, nicking, if not tearing, the tough leather. The bat's ears pinned against her head and her nose wrinkled as a fresh dribble of blood rolled down a toe, already pulling herself further away from the ground and weaving around the fallen branch. Luckily she could afford such an injury.
It probably should have been expected, what with the warnings the wild critter had given her. Maybe she had expected it, but that didn't stop her from doing what she did next.
The bat deftly turned herself around like a spinning quarter, swooping low over the ground where the smaller beast had fallen, flailing around like a madman. Her jaws opened wide as she aimed to snap them shut around it.

Though the child was squirming on the ground below the tree, she wasn't exactly moving enough to evade the bat's swift flight
Shiren screeched, a sharp high pitched sound that could hurt most creature's ears quite sorely. Being bit at however did nothing to stop the child's flailing. In fact it gave Shiren a focus, something to attack. Now every claw, and tooth she could twist that way was aimed for the closest area of bat-flesh that she could reach.
The singular blows may not be that deep, but the child's repeated actions in frantic self defense would still leave quite a nasty set of marks if the bat insisted on gripping the child.

Sensitive ears rang. The bat's eyes squinted, lucky to even hit her mark at that point. Not so lucky that, of course, she was being attacked again.
Wings flapped wildly as she scooped the beast up in her jaws, maintaining a fluttering hover above the ground. Within seconds she felt the soft flesh within her mouth being ripped into.
Her mouth reopened instantly, head tossing, nose dipping, and tongue rolling all to push the critter back out. Jaws twitched, aiming to at least carve a path with one tooth, but still not quite wanting to damage the small thing too bad...well, maybe wanting to a little, but that wouldn't be FAIR (or would it? the thing seems to be doing quite well for itself)--besides, she didn't exactly want to be a maimer or a murderer. Just to get the wild animal back!
Bad idea, bad idea. The longer she tried, the more injured she became.
As soon as the crazed beast had been thrown away (assuming it didn't cling to her nose or something), the bat would swing back up towards the tree, jaws remaining half-open as she perched on a branch very close to the trunk, rubbing at her scratched membrane and stinging maw, roped strings of blood mixed with saliva running out of her mouth, glaring through tearing eyes down at the beast below.

Back on the ground, the child flailed for a little while, just in case before realizing that the threat seemed to be finally leaving her alone. She picked herself up, standing wobbly on her slender legs, then shook herself off in a quick blur of purple fur. With slow steps she toddled towards the fallen tree branch, stopping just short of the bark. Tentatively the child poked at the olive shaped fruits that still clung to the branch with one of her tiny paws.

The bat didn't move from her spot, intent on staying where she was for the moment, but she kept a keen ear on the other's position. When it finally stopped flailing, and instead began to poke some of the fruit clinging to the fallen branch, the chiropteran acted on impulse.
The only warning would be a great choking snort from above, before a big ball of saliva and blood was hawked in the critter's direction. The bat grinned as she watched the object shoot forth, pleased at the size of her loogie. Even if it didn't hit the small animal itself, it would surely make the fruit unappetizing?

Oh. Spit? Shiren stepped back for a moment, staring at the glistening off red substance which had suddenly appeared on the fruit as if she had never seen the like before.
Ok. That didn't seem edible but the fruit still was. Taking a fruit with her two front paws, she rubbed it off on the ground to clean it. Sure there was a little dirt on it now, but now it was edible again.
back to her feast...

The critter cleaned the spit-marred fruit.
The bat huffed and puffed. Darn it!
Oh, well; she'd at least given it a shot, and had the splendor of a torrid spitball to briefly admire.
She went back to cleaning the blood from her jaws, before plucking a nearby fruity twig, and shoved the whole thing down her gullet, teeth cleaving the olive-like fruits clean off as she pulled the stick back in and let it fall to the ground, all covered in blood spots and spittle.
The bat rubbed her nose with a sniff, and peered around for any other such twigs within reach. She'd do the same to those, leaving a tiny pile of twigs in her wake until she'd picked off the area immediately around her.
Once that was done, though she was not yet full, the bat settled down on her perch, staring down at the small beast while her body began demanding that she try to go back to sleep.

Soon Shiren had exhausted the supply of fallen fruit. The small child glanced up at the tree, thinking about how much more she might want. Nah, she'd had enough. If she stayed where food was plentiful, she did not need to overdo it. She lay down where she was on her stomach, her head on the ground facing the tree's roots. She pulled her small wings and fluffy tail up around her for warmth.

Hrmhrmhrm. The bat eyed the small beast carefully as it began to curl up, pulling its fluffy tail around it as it became that distinct doughnut shape many small mammals of the land took when they were ready to sleep.
Her nose twitched, snuffling. She might now have the perfect opportunity now to exact her revenge, but...nah. She'd done enough, and who knew what other instant surprises could unfold should she make yet another attempt.
A bloodied tongue was passed around her lips, the stains rubbed from her face as the bat made herself more comfortable, folding her wings loosely around her body and letting her head hang for a few more moments, eyelids fluttering as drowsiness began to overtake her, before finally tucking her nose behind her wings.
