"Yep, plants. They can be edible. It's like delicious magic." Arden said, also sticking close to Doppler and the wall, a true girl of caution. She did not want to lose the wall at all. Sure, this might be an enclosed yard, but what if... ha nah that kind if thing wasn't real or anything. ... Ok yeah she was getting pretty spooked. When Doppler asked if she had heard anything she was oddly relieved. "Oh, thank goodness I thought I was going bonkers. I mean, this fog is pretty spooky, right? And the lack of doors and windows, the steadily growing darkness and ominous feeling of being watched? The slightest of movements in your peripheral vision??" She shivered. Wow, nice job making it even creepier Arden. Really nailed it there. "Do you think there's drugs in the fog?? That seems the most realistic. It's not like ghosts are real, amirite? Ha, the paranormal. No offense. But I mean, pff, that's just mooovies. I like a good spooky atmosphere, thats why I did this thing! Well, actually I lost a bet, you know how that is, ya?" She was talking now out of nervousness, her words not quite filling the silence, muffled by the fog like cotton, her words colorless and soft around the edges. "This really has been cool, you know, even if I am hella not prepared for this level of intensity, like, people going missing? This weird pseudo-courtyard? Is it just me or have we walked past where we really should have run into the next wall? Ha! Maybe this place is secretly a circle and we'll make it back to the infimary window soon." Despite her mouth's near continuous running, Arden had still been walking, gesturing a bit, causing ripples in the fog, but she suddenly stopped.
"Doppler, do you really, truly, believe in ghosts?" She said more quietly. "'Cause I think you're very justified in that." She wasn't quite looking at him anymore, lost in thought. This whole time she'd kinda just been messing around, but that part of her didn't, couldn't, really handle these kinds of situations. Sure, she'd seen some horror films, but it was different when you were living it - she might be able to avoid the really stupid decisions, but she was far from immune to fear. A bit more resistant than some, perhaps, but once the supernatural seemed to be involved it was a new experience. Especially since she'd never believed in that stuff even a little before. Now? Not convinced, but definitely willing to admit that some things were inexplicable. It was a learning moment, that was for sure, and she didn't think she liked what it meant. Magic was only cool if it wasn't being used against you.

All at once, Arden was talking. Like. A lot.
Apparently, Doppler had opened the floodgates. He was momentarily distracted by the spectacle pouring out from her mouth, although it wasn't long before that strange sound was tugging at his ears yet again. He tried to follow Arden's words while still trying to pinpoint the source, a fruitless effort thus far that seemed as though it would remain so.
Arden was mentioning some things that Doppler hadn't even noticed, at least not consciously; at the mention, however, he was suddenly all too aware of the sensations -- the feeling of being watched, those flickers of motion out the corner of your eye.... Doppler held back a shudder and grimaced, because, god damn it, he'd already screamed once at nothing, he didn't want to do it again.
"Uh, what?" he said at the mention of drugs in the fog. Who puts drugs in fog? And how? Is that even possible?
The child scratched at his head, soon finding out that Arden was here only because she'd lost a bet, and he took another look at her. She'd seemed excited and joyous at the beginning, but now...was she losing her nerve? Most importantly, however: she didn't believe in ghosts. Ah, the poor, poor fool. It wasn't that surprising, then, that she should suddenly be so, uh...anxious; the ones who come along to prove themselves right, so confident and joking, well-- they were always the ones to run away making little girly screams. Or...well, maybe not always. Doppler was pretty much pulling almost all of his experience out from films himself (and those paranormal documentaries)-- shucks, he should be careful not to say that out loud. Especially with Arden's state being what it was now.
He supposed he couldn't really blame her; after all, he'd never...exactly...seen enough of a ghost to truly prove it. BUT HE'S COME CLOSE --and THAT'S what matters. Well, actually, some real proof would be better....
She was right on at least one thing, though: why HADN'T they hit a corner yet? It was really weird. There was also those two's vanishing act...but that was still a block away from the school -- surely any ghosts over there wouldn't have anything to do with those here?
Unable to get a word in edgewise, wholly distracted by her monologue, Doppler's gaze drifted to how Arden's hands were flinging through the air, casting the fog about like some magician spraying water at an audience in awe. If he weren't off to the side of Arden, he might have ran into her when she suddenly came to a stop; instead, he merely stepped a few paces ahead of her, before taking a few more back so that he wouldn't lose her in the fog. It was starting to get close to near-zero visibility.
Her laughing, nervous manner had gone serious. He really hoped a monster wasn't going to jump out, because soon would be the perfect timing for a film, right as he was speaking. He held his breath for a moment at her question (while wondering what she meant by being justified), actually afraid that such a thing might occur. But monsters weren't real. Only ghosts.
She wasn't really looking at him anymore, sort of staring blankly into the fog itself, so he wasn't entirely sure if she wanted an answer or not, but his own mouth was already forming a reply while that uncertainy was still in the matter of forming.
"Well, yeah," he said. "I-I mean...well--" With Arden lost in thought, and Doppler struggling for a proper reply, the rustling came back into focus. His ears rung at the sound while he tried to answer. "I'm ready to, anyhow," he continued, obviously careful in his choice of words. There was a flicker, Doppler spinning around in an instant. Of course, there was nothing, and Doppler could only silent curse at himself for letting the situation get to him again. The flicker came again, and Doppler realized it was his flashlight's beam, dimming and flitting about, apparently running low on power. Well, darn it. "I just want some dang solid proof, ya know?" His flashlight blinked out, but the flickering continued. --Arden's flashlight.
"Uh-oh." The world went dark.

Arden sighed. "Sorry, got a bit wound up th-" she was quite startled when the light flicked off, but ended up just sighing again. "Doppler don't move, I'm grabbing your arm." she said, grabbing at where he had just been.
"You know what? I really should have seen this coming..." She had honestly really terrible luck when it came to not getting involved with things. And it wasn't like she hadn't seen some pretty wierd things before. Nor were ghosts that scary when it came right down to it, even if she did kinda hate jumpscares. Though... this ghost (if that were the explanation) was really good at creating an atmosphere! She could appreciate that.
"Ah well, the fog was getting too thick to see anything through anyway. We should try to keep a hand on each other and the wall to not get lost." She said, reaching her other hand to where she could have sworn the wall had been a minute ago. Either she was farther out than she'd thought, they'd been moved, ir the wall had been an illusion. Or maybe some other option. It was all up in the air at this point, and serious Arden was in full swing (well, as serious as she could get). Sure, ghosts weren't really in her repertoire of things dealt with easily, but she was never one to back down from much of anything.
"Ok well. I can't feel the wall. We can either head straight forwards, or turn around. I doubt our night vision goggles will be much help in such thick fog, if they work at all - i don't think it was coincidence our flashlights went out." She gripped the chair leg tightly under her arm while she stuck the useless flashlight into her bag, effectively switching herself from one blunt weapon to a better one. Also a cheaper one. And possibly a more effective one, since it came from near the ghost's (because at this point skepticism was mostly out the window) lair. Or whatever this place was anyway - Arden was no expert.
"Well I came out looking for a fun night, and I sure got some new information, and now an adventure. I supose I can't complain..." Arden muttered. The fog had seemed very alive just before their lights had gone out. She wondered briefly if maybe this could turn out positively still; surely ghosts could be freindly... not that she'd seen much if that kind of thing, but if Arden were to become a ghost she liked to think she wouldn't kill anyone herself. Wow. It really trew her for a loop, finding that ghosts were... more substantiated by evidence than before. The government always seemed so insistent it was all fake though! She wasn't the type to get on their bad side, and teachers were smart...
But dang, the world was a lot more interesting than before! Or was it be the same amount of interesting as before, just that she now knew...? Did this mean other stuff was real? Like dragons? What about superpowers? She'd need to come back to such questions later. Now was a time for action!
Well, ok, there was some room for discovery. It was a pity their tech had all been shut down, she had a camera on her phone and would liked to have had some evidence. Though it did seem like it might be wise to keep this kind of thing to herself. This place was dangerous and she wouldn't want people just wandering in.

Doppler sighed as he tucked away his flashlight. Knowing what the fog had already done, and with it having been growing even thicker, he didn't even bother with the goggles.
Doppler curled away from Arden's touch, reaching quickly into his other pocket. "Hold on, hold on--" he said, pulling out a long glass tube, "I still have the black...," he clicked the button. There was a fizzle, a pop of light, and then it was gone. "...darkness."
He put it back while Arden made mention of not being able to feel the wall. Well, that was worrying. Of course, his first reaction was, "What? Well-- here, let me try...," stepping around where he'd seen Arden with the brief flash of violets, and waving his arms wildly in the air before him while he spun around in circles. He didn't stop until he felt himself slap skin and mutter, "Whoops." With all that spinning, he was left a little disoriented until Arden talked again.
His frustration melted away at the mention that this was no mere coincidence. In the darkness, his eyes sparkled. "You mean...you think it might be a ghost?" Doppler scrambled around in his pockets for the tape recorder. If that was really so, then surely he might be able to pick up some whispers now?
"Let's just keep moving forward," Doppler suggested. "We're bound to hit a wall eventually."
He took a moment to pause in hesitation, clicking on the tape recorder, which he knew already had one tape inside. Then reached around to find and wrap his fingers around Arden's. He was glad that he at least had his gloves on, fingerless though they may be.
As his eyes struggled with adjusting to the darkness, he realized the rustlings seemed to have grown louder with his ears trying to make up for the lack of sight, and waved his recorder around trying to get it to catch the sound.

"Well. I mean there's other possible explanations out there possibly but... yeah I've always kinda liked the idea that I'd stick around if I died, so I certainly wouldn't mind ghosts being real." Arden shrugged, though it wasn't visible in the fog. She had always assumed such things would be restricted to television but she certainly wasn't going to let her assumptions cause any harm - and if it was a ghost she wanted to accept that it was. People in horror movies always died because they weren't prepared. She really hoped they wouldn't die. It would suck.
When Doppler grabbed her hand, she was pretty relieved to have an anchor in the fog other than the ground. Sure, she wasn't completely without sensation, but it was quiet aside from the rustling abd she couldn't see at all. The knowledge that Doppler hadn't been whisked away by... whatever was out there was reassuring. Plus she could avoid that trope where there's a hand on the character's shoulder and they assume it's the ither person but then they realize it's actually the monster. She wanted to be able to hit it right away and not give it time to do anything. Safety first, even if it was a bit silly. "I sure hope we hit a wall soon, because while this is pretty exciting and I like adventure, being stuck here forever would be lame." She was an adrenaline junkie forbsure, even if she wouldn't admit it, so while the suspense and (presumable) danger was quite thrilling, she had gotten herself into a number of things in the past and sometimes stuff went wrong. It hadn't killed her yet, but that implied that it might someday - she's bot a cautious person, but she's not stupid either (just a bit dense sometimes hah).
"It's tempting to follow those noises." she said after a brief period of silence. Was it a bad idea, yea pretty much, but again, Arden doesn't know the meaning of caution, and this was one stereotypical dumb move in horror that she could kinda understand. Well, maybe not if it were in her house, or if she was alive, but having another person along always gave her a boost in confidence. Boosts in confidence made her nore reckless than usual and boy was that saying something. Still, this was real life, not a movie, so following noises might not be as horrible of an idea. she had the feeling they weren't going to be able to leave without confronting whatever was here. After all, they could be walking in circles and never know it. This place could be literally infinite! ... okay that was less likely. Still, she couldn't help but wonder if they were even in the same plane of existence. She'd read books where characters traveled to other worlds before. Or maybe this was just a weird, kinda magical place. Like, ghost magic. Honestly, her thoughts weren't very organized. There were just so many possibilities!

The child had come here earlier before the fog and darkness had moved in because the place offered a fair amount of shelter.
Waking up to pitch blackness wasn't fun, at all, but she'd done it before. At least she wasn't afraid of the dark.
However she was cold. An oversized and holely shirt and mud caked shorts were not enough to keep skinny arms and legs warm on a chilly, damp time of day. It smelled like fog. That was a nice smell, clean, less smelly than the city streets and trash dumps where she sometimes had to sleep. She draped a giant, muddy, bloody rabbit doll over her shoulders for the slight warmth the stiffed animal offered. It wasn't much.
She intentionally took a loud step, listening to the echoes against walls in the dark. She hadn't seen anything helpful in here before it had gotten dark so she figured she should work her way out. The echoes helped her in that matter, providing enough sensory input to pick a good way to walk.
The door she found was partially open. Slender arms pushed hard against it to make a wider gap to fit through. The terrible scream of rusted hinges forcibly moved screamed out like a blotch of the hated color of artificially produced yellow plastered against a black wall. The same color her shirt would he if it wasn't filthy and it wasn't dark.
But yeah, against the silence the sound stood out starkly, probably audible from anywhere on the grounds.
The child, maybe 10 years old.. Give or take covered her ears, and ran out before the heavy door could slam shut on her and keep her inside.
She was outside now. That made it a little harder to echolocate things as there were less walls to bounce from and the ground was far softer.
(If light can be found you can mistake her for a zombie or something)

Doppler froze, all of his body clenching tight, including the fingers holding Arden's. There was a long, loud, low, grinding, crying screech of a creak.
Images of a hulking, bleeding monster of a ghost dragging a massive, rusty stone sword around first came to mind. At first this frightened him, but then he thought, HOLY SHIT THAT'S SO COOL I GOTTA GET A GOOD LOOK OF IT. At the same time, he realized it was probably just a door banging in the wood--(what wind)--A DOOR--!
"Hallelujah...!" he muttered sarcastically, and would be forcefully dragging the bigger Arden along, keeping close to the side of the building as he fled towards the sound. He slid a hand into his pocket, before remembering all the lights had gone out, and frowning. Not wanting to bang his face into said door or wall, he began to slow down a little.
"Let's get through that door and hope some teacher left a penlight laying around somewhere, eh?" He couldn't believe how big this friggin' courtyard he didn't even know about was...and he wasn't sure if he'd be able to navigate their way back to the front (adn thus back to the two wheelbarrows stuffed full of [debatably] useful ghost hunting materials) without SOME sort of light.
