" What were you before? "
I've been alive for a very, very long time.
I remember things. Many things. I remember when I was younger, and I stop at the face of the Waters. I felt a radiance on me, and I looked to my creator.
"You are Amitiel," she said. "You are an Angel of the Most High."
I believed her, because I knew nothing else.
She said that I would learn, in time, the proper way to serve. Learning... that was my purpose.
Today, I wished to learn. So, I descended upon Eokia, from my place in the Heavens. Vessa, she would know that I am gone, but I wanted to see this place for myself.
Sonlas, as it is called, is a nation once occupied by one of the most powerful entities I had ever seen. Sol Invictus, as I recall - a sentient star turned god by the people of his planet. He was grand. And, yet, I could not meet him before he left this earth.
This country was expansive, and existing within Eokia's land made it my jurisdiction. The citizens seemed to mind not the apparent lack of concrete leadership that governed them. A king was just that - a king. But, the one, true way to live was to have the guiding hand of the heavens behind you.
Goodness, the landscape was beautiful. Mortal cities never ceased to amaze me - how something so simple could serve so much purpose for them. These people lived their lives within the confines of these conceptual boundaries, and did so happily. No matter where you went, that seemed to be a constant. Everyone has a bubble.
A little girl, perhaps an elf, stood on the back of a beast of burden, staring into the sky. I remember the shimmering, wide-eyed expression of wonder on her face. She was mesmerized with the sky, with the stars...
With me. She saw me. She was able to perceive me. She watched my energies dance, turn, wisp, and reform around my body. She lifted her hand, I lifted mine. She lifted her other hand, and I did so as well. Then, she twirled on the back of the tamed beast, and I, too, twirled. This dance went on, and I found myself entranced.
I wanted to move closer.
I made too. The winds began to pick up, and the light breeze began to turn into that of a gale. I watched the smile leave her face, replaced with a horrified stare. The beast began to buck, and she fell from its back with a thud. When it charged away, searching for shelter, the girl was left alone as I continued my approach.
She looked around herself as the fields began to ignite. The flames spun around her, and she screamed. The sound was deafening - frightening beyond all measure. Somehow, this innocent's abject abhorrence toward me stung deeper than anything I had ever witnessed. The tears that stained her cheeks were my doing, her hyperventilation of my making.
I reached out for her, but stopped once I heard her speak.
"Go away!"
Rejection. That was a feeling Vessa explained to me. I stopped, and instead of an apology, I took my leave. In a flash of light, I was gone, leaving the girl in the flaming remains of her field.
She escaped, I saw to it from afar. And, yet, somehow I feel as though a part of her died that day. The Heavens were no longer something to marvel.
Perhaps I was meant to be admired from afar? Perhaps humanity could not quite grasp the glory of angelic form? I knew this to be true.
Or, perhaps, I knew nothing.
