She could see Michela just at the very edge of wherever she was hiding and it seemed as if she was about to get back into the action if the usual time it took her to pray was anything to go by. Still this was almost too perfect a moment to pass up and she quickly parsed through the thousands of files on her smartphone until she came upon a single voice file, "Omae wa mou shinderiu", a rough male voice spat from her phone. The two guards paused for a moment before a blinding flash surged behind them and Veronika was laid to witness what was quite possibly the single most horrific fucking thing she had ever seen, which was saying something for someone who had spent their entire life in Ukraine war zones. Whatever Michela had done the two standing in front of her seemed to explode with electricity, skin cooking and turning charcoal black to reveal the deep red muscle underneath which had all been cooked in less than a second, their eyes exploding and bodies falling back into charred heaps. It was an eclectic mix of smells from the scent of fried beef to pork and burnt liver to the charcoal of skin and choking odour wafting from their hair. Her response was delayed for all of a moment before a gurgling cough broke free and Veronika was forced to turn away from the sight. The mage had seen more than her own fair share of terrible things in her life but this was the first time such blatant horror was performed before her. The soft slump of a body further down the hall and the short spasming of the foot sticking out from the alcove the final guard had been at gave her some idea of what he had gone through as well. "No. I don't think I am quite alright. Not exactly in the business of desecrating people, but alright sure let's go." She had to push forward in spite of what had just happened and hurried after Michela towards what she dearly hoped was the target and not a trap or worst yet she prayed silently no one would stop them so they could be spared from this monster. Veronika kept her eyes mostly on the ground as she attempted to push the smell and sight from her mind, desperate to not have to think about what she had just witnessed and trusted Michela to lead her along safely.

Hmm, it seemed that my charge happened to be a bit squeamish, that much was for sure. Either she was rather new but powerful despite that, or she had never been in the thick of fighting. I figured it was something of a mix of the two, so I decided to give her a very important lesson that had been given to me when I was a young woman of about her age. "If I did not kill them, then we both would have been dead. They threw their lot in with the Technocracy, the peddlers of evil and conflict who wish nothing but death and destruction upon the ones Chosen by the Lord to wield the Keys to the Kingdom of the Earth. Even worse, they are traitors who wield the keys seeking to prevent those who use them as the Lord intended from being able to do so, traitors of the highest degree who turn the Blessings of the Lord into weapons against his Chosen. Showing them mercy only results in a bullet through the back," I said, sighing and shaking my head as I walked along. "You have a kind heart, Veronika, that much is for sure. Keep it and direct it towards the unknowing Sleepers and your fellow chosen. But remember, you wield the same power with a different Key. You have a responsibility to use it to help your fellow Chosen and the Sleepers, which means using it to exterminate those who seek to harm them like the Technocracy."
I hoped my words would get through to her and give her the strength to continue onward with the power to complete her mission and use her power for the good of the Sleepers and her fellow Chosen of God. After all, each Mage was a gift from the Lord who ought to be protected and cherished, and in turn they ought to use that power to shape the world for the betterment of mankind. Unfortunately, some people who choose to oppose the Lord will oppose us, and as such they must be fought much like the Vampires, Demons, and other enemies of God. As we continued forward, I looked around and tried to find where we were supposed to go. We had gone up another flight of stairs and were relatively close by, but the security was tight so I would rather not look around blindly and run into too many more fights. It was obvious that they were traumatic for her, so I wanted to get her to where she needed to go and do my best to take them on myself so that I would not have to burden her with the sights. "Are we to where you know the way yet? I think we are close by, Veronika." Hopefully she was still paying attention so that we could get this mission done with as soon as possible. After all, time was of the essence now that we had encountered and disabled a group of enemies.

Us or them? Kill or be killed? It was those sort of fucked up mentalities that had landed her parents in graves and thousands of people across her country in a bloodied war where people were willing to kill each other for such simple reasons as not being aligned properly. Veronika understood what Michela was saying but it felt wrong in her mouth to attempt to spit that back up, who cared if they were fighting against her god or attempting to stop the two from doing what they had come here to do? She had seen the physical might Michela had wielded at that moment and was sure that she would have been capable of incapacitating those four without killing them. Maybe it was her fault for taking such a passive stance this entire time? It was a bit much to take in at the moment but Veronika resolved she would avoid such indiscriminate slaughter in the future and would try her best to hold Michela back from such things as well.
"Oi don't talk to me like I know nothing about traitors and mercy being a death sentence. I'm not going to deny what you say here and now, but I'm not going to accept such bullshit like we have to kill each other no matter what like it's common sense." She grumbled to the other woman as the nun attempted to persuade her that what she had done wasn't in some way a crime or abhorrent on multiple levels. Veronika would have to think it over on her own at a different point. The hacker looked to her phone as it sprung a map of their local area to her, just down the hall from them was the target, locked behind a single solid steel door and no guards outside or along the hall. It caused an odd twist in her gut at the sight of so few people. She had known this base was occupied but so far they had run into a token force at best.
"End of the hall, behind that steel door. It's a bit too quiet though, there should be more guards than those four we ran into." she chewed worriedly at her bottom lip before shrugging it off and marching down the corridor, phone moving hotkeys about as she prepared an assortment of programs for quick use once the shit hit the fan.

I sighed and shook my head at her response, giving a short prayer in Latin to Saint Jude, as I would need all the patience and fortitude to carry on through this ordeal. She simply did not understand the kind of war that we were involved in right now, it wasn't one of a misunderstanding or something that could be resolved with words. It was a Crusade where Reality itself and the nature of it was the holy land, and the battle would not be won or cease until one side laid totally annihilated or converted to the other side. Unfortunately, conversion was not an option for us as I was neither skilled in the Magick of the Mind nor was it likely even if I was, the Technocracy employed serious reconditioning on all of their agents to prevent subversion from such measures after all. "I cannot explain it now, for it would take too much time, but ask me later when this is all complete. I am more than willing to explain to you and show you why such things are necessary," was all I said to the girl as I gave her a weary look. I had fighting on the front lines of the Ascension War for over a decade now. I had fought through the dark times that had emerged as a result of the Avatar Storm and the supposed End Times when I was still a young mage with far less power than I had now. Had it not been for my immortality, I would have died many times over to the forces of the Technocracy. As such, I knew just what the stakes of this fight were, unlike this young fledgling who only knew the warfare of the Sleepers.
I could only agree about what she had said and replied, "I sensed far more than them, but it seems that all the ones I could sense have probably been pulled back. They might have noticed the disruptions in reality caused by my magic and realized that average soldiers would not cut it. I am a veteran of the Ascension Wars so I would not be surprised if they know my Resonance. They likely are organizing a more powerful resistance to fight me since they know a thing or two about what I can do. Unfortunately for them, I have gotten stronger since the last time they got records of me." With a few skillful knife throws I put a knife on each corner of the door, and with a short prayer I enacted the miracle that we needed to get past the likely locked door without setting off lock sensors, "The door is now incorporeal. Now head on through, if the bullets start flying I will cancel the magic so that you can use the door as protection. You have a job to do in there, and it is my job alone to fight these traitors to the Traditions. I would not leave that burden on your mind since you are not prepared to take a life. That is normal, but it is something you will have to think carefully about."
After she ducked through the door I would cancel the magick anyway, just to make sure that I had no way to escape. I left the knives in place just in case I needed to duck through the door quickly, but so long as that was not necessary I would instead prepare for the battle ahead. My self-enhancement from the last battle was still in place, at least in regards to not being slowed by damage. However, I would need more out of my form. Faster, stronger, more durable. More perfect than the weak flesh that I had on my body. My flesh warped and became tempered with Truegold, my form invigorated and despite the extra weight moving much faster than a human should. My strikes were beyond human in strength, and I was ready to make my enemies pay the blood price for turning against the Lord. I knew that they had to be coming, so all I needed to do now was wait for them.

Right so apparently she was going to get a lecture she very much did not care for and did not want after all of this was over for not wanting to commit wholesale slaughter for no reason. Veronika would have to worry about that later as the moment the two began to close in on the door and her partner did whatever little trick to undo the deadlock keeping it close she could hear the pounding footsteps of something far heavier than a normal human marching down the holes and kicking open the doors along their way, "Oi whatever don't act like I'm a pussy. Make sure you don't die and leave me trapped here." she said while pausing at the door to look back at the gathering of what she could only assume to be Technocrat goons at the far end of the hall.
Perhaps less had come than either had expected as the numbers rounded out to eight in total with four coming from the doors lining the hall and two coming from where Veronika and her had come from and another two at the far end towards another hall. The four furthest back seemed to be decked out in some strange heavy armor and carrying sleek guns that hummed with power. One had fired as he turned down the hall, the shot going wild as he mismanaged the aim and a single block of iron slammed into a wall and through it, and the wall behind it and the wall behind that. Railguns if she had any guess and when it came to Hypertech they could be carrying the equivalent of handheld naval cannons seeing as the power to run something like that was well beyond the capacity for most to just hold. The four that had come from the doors were dressed similarly to the separatists they had engaged before.
"Try not to get hit." Yeah she was totally fucked, the principle behind those guns was simple if she was correct, magnets firing a pulse to shoot a metal block or rod at high speeds only the projectile picks up speed many times over on the way to the target. Surprisingly enough that turned out to only be the second largest problem they faced at this moment because as Veronika closed the door behind her and took in the device before her it was a revelation that there was no server or laptop in this room for her to hack but a rather large contraption of what must be hypertech. The good thing about this was that she was very good with this sort of thing, the bad part was that whatever coated this protected it from her magic and she was going to assume an electromagnetic wave would have similarly poor results if it was insulated inside.
Two large tubes coiled and spun about the room until reaching together at one end in a large black block with the other ends of the pipe ending suspended over a generator of some sort. Every few seconds an almost invisible collision could be felt from the two tubes and a large reaction from the generator underneath as power surged up from it. "Oooh fuck. Oh fuck. Of course they but a hypertech doomsday weapon in here." she worried less for Michela now seeing as she had the gut feeling that whatever this did would likely erase them from history anyway. Veronika moved over to the black box and looked about it, hearing the hum of power running through the base and upon closer look at the tubes she was able to spot what seemed to be large magnets lining the sides. "Right right right. Lots of power, magnets, tubes. Higgs Boson?" she questioned to herself as she wondered just why they would be using a particle accelerator here.
With each pulse of power from the machine she could see the energy leaping from the generator placed under the tubes and disappearing into an equidistant point between the two. Or was that energy at all? This was hypertech and that was almost as bullshit as their magic, and if they had access to a specific type of exotic matter they could open up a wormhole right here, or more likely they would be feeding the growth of a blackhole that would be created in the particles colliding. This was a bit beyond her field as Quantum physics was vast and hypertech surrounding it complicated.

I had no time to even think back on what my partner had been saying, for as soon as I had readied my abilities, the Technocrats arrived, this time with some of them packing the heavy weapons. It was far less than I was expecting, at least in quantity. I would have assumed after the last incident in which I was engaged with them, they would have learned their lesson about what it took to put me out of commission for good. Unfortunately for them, they very much had not. Especially considering they had sent some regular soldiers along with the technocrats, which while annoying, were not an issue at the moment. Those were powerful weapons indeed, but the issue with them was that they would only leave large holes in my body rather than causing explosive amounts of force necessary to blow me apart. The magic that I had done before would ensure that no matter how many holes there were in me, my body would not crumble. That was good, and I simply needed to avoid getting hit too hard in the center of mass and sending me flying so that they could keep me at bay forever. It was a challenge of at least keeping them busy until my partner was done with her job, and that was something I could do rather easily.
Without warning I touched off at high speed towards the men with the guns and started chanting, which got the attention of the men with the railguns far more than then the ones with the regular rifles, who were uselessly firing at me, their shots either going wide or flattening against my flesh to no avail. Some of the rounds pierced my armor in places, but they were all stopped by the flesh beneath that acted as a much tougher sort of armor than what they were using. However, what was more of a concern was the weapons the technocrats were using. The chanting was to deal with that, and while I was stopped dead in my tracks by the first round, which had taken a giant chunk out of my side, sending pulped kidney and blood flying down the hall and splattering against the window of the room that Veronika was in, the others would not be a problem, at least not this volley. My body phased out of the material and while my armor was torn up by the shots, my body remained totally unharmed as I regained my momentum and charged the enemies down the hall. Naturally, the normal soldiers were panicked to all fuck and useless now after having seen a woman just tank a round that powerful, even if it did stop me in my tracks and throw me for a loop.
With a swing of my sword, I forced the power of the forces into my blade and with another point of quintessence enhanced the strike so that I cut through the armor at the necks of the two closest technocrats, and while it did provide some protection, they had not had time to react to the fact that their attacks had no effect on me. They were obviously not informed on the exact specifics of the 'reality deviant' that they were currently facing it seemed. As such, they grasped and clawed at their necks, trying desperately to stop the bleeding but their suit's healing would not save them in time. They were doomed to bleed out here and now as the wounds that caused the bleeding were aggravated by the primal energies that had infused my blade. However, the other two had abandoned their comrades to take some distance and let loose another salvo at me. I had no time to stop them or dodge now, however. I gritted my teeth for the inevitable and instead drove forward, trying to damage them while I took the hit. I managed to wound another one of them, nothing major, before the bolts sent me flying hard, one lodging in my skull and the other in my chest where my heart used to be.
The force was enough to carry me through the door that Veronika was working at, and it left what appeared to be my horribly mangled corpse with two glowing hot rods sticking out of it lying at the floor at her feet as I skidded and bumped into her ankles. It would take me a while to recover enough to fight, so instead I took up a gambit and pretended to be dead, gathering my forces for a final attack on them while pretending to be dead. Hopefully Veronika wouldn't be too spooked by what was about to occur and what had just happened.

The shrill noise of metal grinding against stone was all the alert she had before a solid force bumped into the back of her leg, a quick glance over made the hacker regret the decision at the sight of Michela now filled with very literal holes. Between her dead partner, and the advancing technocrats, and the particle collider which had a more than likely chance of swallowing this entire room in either an explosion or the creation of a fast growing black hole it was almost too much to decide just what to be scarred by in the moment. Rather she choked back the bile in her throat and maneuvered around Michela to hide behind the device that took up the majority of the room so as to not be spotted by the enemy forces.
In the meantime she would have to work on either disarming this from doing whatever had been planned for it or mitigating the effects so as to not have her be spaghettified immediately. There wasn't actually much that could be done as the exotic matter began to be steadily drained into the point between the two tubes, feeding into something infinitely small but would surely given even a few minutes grow to encompass the building. So what could she actually do? In the end it was all Quintessence and she could control it in some ways but doing the wrong thing could still result in the building going up in an explosion in the best case scenario.
"Of course you just had to die right when shit gets way too real." she griped to the corpse while pulling out her phone and scanning the exotic matter with a quick function on her phone to process it before she could write the program to do as she wanted. The generator was feeding into the miniature black hole at a constant rate while scaling up over predetermined points of a scale monitoring the progression of the hole's size. Of course at it's size the singularity had yet to be covered by an event horizon large enough to blot out her ability to scan so if she theoretically broke that infinitely dense disc of space then the hole would collapse. Maybe. Either that or reality would become so warped for a moment in time that any possibility that could happen within the area of, she generously guessed, this building would happen. It was quite literally impossible to know what would happen which was better than knowing what would in the alternative.
Now all she had to do was figure out how to crack something infinitely dense, but first she removed the exotic matter feeding into it and was non-too surprised when a small hole in space no larger than a pin appeared in the point instead, sucking in air and growing larged slowly but surely. Right well if Black holes were just giant masses corrupting space-time then all she would need to do to break the infinitely dense material was cut it too pieces using itself. She hoped.

I wasn't sure what exactly was going on considering my eyes along with a good part of my brain were obliterated, not that the brain particularly mattered for an immortal mage like myself who knew that their spirit was tied to their entire body, not just the brain like most folks were. Luckily however, my ears and mouth were still intact which gave me a way to interact with the world and as long as I kept the movements subtle I could still use my body to cast, which I had been doing. My sword was in my hand and the inscriptions on the blade had changed to be something far more intense and for anyone who could read them they were filled with condemnations of the enemies of the lord to the primordial hellfires that filled the abyss that he had thrown the Renegades known as Demons into. I heard them searching around the room and I had heard Veronika move over to the other side of what seemed to be a whirring device that I was not exactly sure what it was. All I knew was that my magic was just about ready, and it was obvious that my partner was panicking given what she had said, so I figured I could give her a few words before all hell broke loose so that she knew what exactly was happening. After all, it was too late for the technocrats even if they heard what I was about to say, in fact it would be beneficial because they would be concentrating on my voice instead.
"A true servant of the Lord our God does not die until their job is done, Veronika," I said, my remaining face curling up into a wicked smile, "Now perish, all you Servants of Evil and burn in the fires of hell for all eternity! All Glory to the Lord our God, the God who is the Greatest! AMEN!" I yelled, gaining the now extremely scared technocrats attention before the room, except for where Veronika was working, erupted in hellfire and brimstone. The room burned with the intensity of a thousand billion souls condemned the oblivion, the fate of all who went against the precepts of the lord my god and their suits could not save them, to say nothing of the unprotected humans that were with them. All that was left of the enemies was ash and the smell of burnt bodies, as well as the molten slagged remains of their weapons, suits, and other various bits of technology that were on them. The machine that I was up against survived by virtue of it being in the bubble where no fire had existed, but the rest of the room was charred and seared beyond recognition as the entire room was caught in the conflagration. The fire alarm in the room had melted before it had the chance to go off even, destroyed the by the same hellfire that I had called upon the technocrats.
With that done, I stood up, the wounds still very visible throughout my body, though the rounds fell out as soon as I stood up. With some chanting I channeled my magic to heal my face first and set to work knitting my other wounds, which would take more time since I frontloaded much of the power of the spell so that I could see what was going on, and it very much did not look good. "Whats is this thing and what is it's status?" I asked, as if nothing had happened and I was uninjured and had just walked into the room. I had long gotten over the issue of seeming to die, it had happened to me enough times already that I was not too bothered by it.

Oh of course it turns out her dead partner IS A FUCKING ZOMBIE OF COURSE SHE IS because what other reality would exist except the one in which shit keeps hitting her in the face one after another with giving Veronika even a moment to process all of this like a normal person would and instead expected her to just roll with it. Thankfully she was becoming adaptable at the strangeness of other mages and even better it seemed Michela was now also made of hellfire and brimstone so the technocrats would be toast. The only bad part is the one where she was watching a singularity form in front of her eyes with the only options being to be fucked or to be fucked harder.
"Right well I'm going to be asking you whatever the fuck that was after this because I most certainly don't remember death then revival then murder by brimstone being a part of the package for being a mage. YOU KNOW LIKE PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSED TO DIE WHEN THEY DIE BUT I GUESS YOU NEVER GO THE FUCKING MEMO!" she screamed and pointed a finger at Michela while her smartphone continued to analyze the growing effects of the black hole. Eyes slightly wild and hair frayed with frustration at so much happening at once and now having to do something she was fairly sure would likely fail but most certainly hurt.
"Right, status. Status, uh bad. Really bad like I don't quite know how to fix this bad and I'm going to do something bad so hey if you ever wondered what it's like to be spaghetti then I have some good news for you." she rambled on, the program required finishing and activating as she attempted to telefrag the singularity itself. It was a dimensional anomaly so it made sense, in desperate hope logic, that using data to relocate it would be good for breaking it. The program struggled to alter the complex code that was the tumor pressing into reality, unable to process the code of so much matter at once without the proper spheres. Veronika felt the world pause for a moment and the wail of something beyond her scope of comprehension fill her with power and knowledge beyond what she knew was her own. The small hole began to break, a portion of it disappearing before collapsing back in on itself and in it's place were cracks slowly crawling along reality as everything broke under the severe pressure of an infinite density collapsing in on itself. Reality slowly deteriorated around them as the building was consumed in a distortion.

Well, it seemed that my companion was rather startled by the fact that I had seemingly died and came back to life, which puzzled me for a moment until I remembered that this was not an unusual reaction to it for anyone who did not know about that particular quirk of mine. She also assumed that it was something related to my magick it seemed, and that was where she would be wrong. She was not aware that I was a Thrice Blessed individual, not just blessed with the gift of True Magick, but also the gifts of True Faith and Immortality as well so that I could serve him better. "All will be explained in time, Veronika. I assure you that this has nothing to do with magick, well besides the accelerated healing," I said, waving at my face. However, I couldn't really explain too much more than that right now, after all, the situation seemed to be quite dire if what I could tell was true and especially if what she had said implied what I thought it meant. A black hole, which was something I had learned about when I was a schoolgirl. The convent that I was in insisted that we have proper science education and that we keep up on it, as we should know the mechanisms by which the Lord organized the universe.
And while I was more than aware now that such things were technocratic inventions and not the true nature of the universe, I kept up with what they put out so that I could better fight them. And from what I knew about these things, the reality collapse that was happening around us right now was the least of our worries. The same could go for the spaghettification. "Right now we need to get the energy this is about to admit somewhere else, and quick. I will handle the gravitational effects on our patterns, and you handle the radiation that thing is about to emit in massive amounts. As for the reality dislocation, well let us just hope we can deal with the place we end up. I can always adapt us to the environment we end up in if it ends up hostile as well," I said before putting my Magick to work in order to deal with what was about to occur.
I threw as much Quintessence as I could at this and pushed every drop of will that I could into the spell that I was incanting. It was a spell to free both of our bodies of the effects of gravitation without such a thing killing us outright. This was only possible through the application of both Life and Prime, and would be a massively powerful effect. It was a race against time to make it work, and I had to make sure it worked, or else my charge was dead and I was in for a world of pain. I would likely survive it, as I had the Lord's protection, but this was a power so great I was unsure if I would be wanting to survive it given what surviving would entail. Reality seemed to bend around me as I sliced my arm to offer a blood sacrifice to my blade as it glowed with the primal forces of the cosmos, not caring a bit about just how vulgar I was doing was. Just as I could start to feel the intense gravity beginning to try to pull at my skin and hers the magic was complete and I unleashed it, stopping it moments before we would die to it and all I could hope now was that she would get the forces directed elsewhere before we were fried by the radiation. That would hurt like a son of a bitch and take months to recover from since I would have a hard time using magick like that to heal that kind of injury. That and she would be deader than I should have been long ago.

The wail of reality being subverted by something beyond it slowly tapered away, draining the blood from Veronika's face as she felt fatigue and pain lance through her. What she had just done was vulgar beyond even the most acceptable of terms, as the violation of space and time and the concept of distance into itself carried weight equal to that of a bystander witnessing what had just occurred and to the degree of what had just happened to force a infinite amount of mass to fold into itself and occupy the same space was beyond what could be endured by reality. One positive outcome was that the blackhole was now collapsing and the danger of her home city suddenly having a gaping hole in it were virtually null yet the two of them were still stuck inches from the collapse.
The fact that neither of them had been turned into infinitely long strands of what used to be people Veronika could only assume that Michela was working to negate the forces of gravity from tearing them apart. She would have to thank the nun and maybe if she was feeling extra nice after this follow some of her suggestions. Firstly though the reality hacker would have to do work on her own to negate the massive amount of radiation escaping the collapse before it melted them. There were so many ways to die that it was a miracle the two had scraped by each time, or at least Veronika thought so as she began to grab programs from her phone with her brain interface to grab at the energies escaping and direct them around the herself and the nun. There were so few places to send them that she could only hope that shooting the energy directly up wouldn't fuck anything else up too badly.

This was at least not the worst possible outcome of what had happened, she was using a powerful spell to move the radiation somewhere else, hopefully somewhere that would not be an issue. However, this did not solve the issue of the spacial distortions that were occurring due to what she had done. This made it extremely dangerous to teleport out of here and we would not be able to escape in time to get out of it's range. That meant that right now it was either risk the teleportation and likely get merged with some piece of scenery, which would be quite bad even for me, or risk ending up in some alien dimension or somewhere in the Horizon realms thanks to this. I was willing to take my chances with the Horizon realms, and it was quite a bit safer than trying to teleport in these circumstances. There was really no practical upshot to this situation, and while I was watching this I felt I was on the verge of a breakthrough, but nothing had happened just yet to trigger it. So all I could do right now was to attempt to protect Veronika with my body. Hopefully the experience and the subsequent jump would not be too traumatic for the girl, though at this point I had a feeling that everything that would happen today would be traumatic for her no matter how tame it was or was not. It just seemed to be the case with her and how green she was.
As reality began to break down around us and I could feel the impending transition begin to occur, I move over to the girl and wrapped her up in a tight hug before saying, "I recommend you close your eyes, the transition might be more than a bit mind bending for a novice." With that excuse in place I would hold onto her tightly and with a bit of chanted latin prayers for safety, I used my magic to envelop her in a cocoon of the truegold flesh that my body was made out of, so that she would not be hurt by the forces of the insane transition that was about to occur. The energies would only scorch my flesh, and it would take extremely large amounts to reach her through the barrier I had just put up around her.
I barely made it in time, and as soon as the spell was complete reality broke and my mind was subjugated to sights and sounds and smells that would have broken someone with a lesser mind, but I did not break. Even as my body was scorched with the energies of paradox that decided to hit at the same time that reality bent, I gritted my teeth and took the pain, as I was far more able to handle it than Veronika was. I was the Aegis and the Sword that protected the Chosen who were weaker and more fragile than me, if I could not do my duty then I was worthless. So I had to hold, no matter how long this lasted and what was to come on the other side of this rift, if there was anything on that side of the rift.
