"See, before you were saying invaded, and that's different than a claim. If she's invaded your soul, then she's close at hand probably watching even now. If she has a contract on your soul, then your soul is marked to go to her when the time is up." Brush clarified the difference between the two concepts.
"If shes got a claim on it, you won't be able to hide it from her in the end. There are very few places spiritual beings can't go. You could leave yourself vulnerable without even knowing it." The dragon warned. "You're also more likely to lock yourself out of the dimension than to keep something like that out."
"With every kind of bond there's at least one way to trace the connection. There are spells, and magics built on finding people, so you will find a way to find her." Brush was sure about that. Actually finding accurate daemon lore however could be harder. How many different things were called daemons in the universe? Probably a lot if other species were anything to go by.

Choushin frowned. Some of this wasn't what he was expecting to hear, but he just has to work with what he's got, even if it isn't much. "For all tense and purposes, we'll just say that she managed to get a claim on my soul. If I can't hide from her, then that means to break the claim, I'll have to find out as much as I can, becoming a detective on the topic. While I know she's got her hand on my soul, I don't think I can summon her outright. She's not like that. If I knew a weakness of a female Daemon with strong mental powers who claim others souls by giving them what they want, then I could turn the tables on her." He said, thinking about what he could do. He didn't think using mental effects would do much, so he could only think of trying out something more physical.

"Maybe you'll find something but even among the same species weaknesses can vary a lot. You won't find put personal weaknesses like attachments or things of value without an encounter, and those are useful for trying to get the better of someone stronger than you, but you may find more common things." The dragon noted, as she came over and, began to examine some of the books more closely.

Choushin yawned. "I did notice how weak they had gotten after getting a bind on my soul, so maybe I can use that to get them so exhausted, they can't keep their end of the bargain and give up the ghost." He said, remembering that much at least from the deal he made. He still had time to do so, but the sooner, the better.

"Maybe" the dragon conceded, "but spirit-based beings don't die easily, since most have already died once. It'll be good to have bets in more than one place." It was the same idea as not having all the eggs in one basket.

"True, but subjectively to me I don't have much time left, even if 100 years seems longer than one thinks. That means I have to get her to drop the hold before then." Choushin said, brainstorming on how to handle her. While he did get power from her, it did amplify his natural power, and that might be what he needed in order to turn the tables on the daemon.

Don't dwell too much on the deadline. You can do a lot in that amount of time." Humans did. So did other shorter lived races. Some even acted as if 100 years was akin to forever. "does this sound right at all?" The dragon asked before reading.
"A Daemon is a spirit who has lived to the point where it has begun to consume souls. They eventually gain power from, and take on the attributes of the sorts of souls they consume. By consuming multiple souls they can amass great power, but they have to be careful to not consume too much of any one type of soul, else they end up becoming a being like that which they have chosen to eat.
They often gather souls in the terms of contracts, which can be made with both spiritual and mortal beings, promising some power or success, or even in situations where no formal promise is made, but conditions set by the daemon are met. Daemons are very cunning, and often can add unspoken details to the contracts that they do not have to tell the contractee. Once the terms of a contract is complete, claimed souls find their way to the daemon, or the daemon to them."

Choushin nodded his head. "That seems to be the definition on the nose. Since they're all about souls, it'll be hard. But this specific Daemon might have made a mistake: They gave me the power to become a Golden Kitsune, so I have much more power than they thought to think about." He said.

"You can't know what others like that think or plan for." Brush assumed, sure that there was no way for the fox to be sure that the adversary he was hoping to shake had not planned for the type of power he was bragging about. "also, in many of the stories and histories, those who give power, keep some caveat that gives them an advantage when things don't go their way, especially the cunning ones. If you want to surprise them, its better to do it with something they have no way of assuming you have, though that's tricky too. Soul-bonds can be used to gather foreknowledge of stuff sometimes after all."

"She did give me a lot of power, but I've developed some powers she isn't aware of. Even then, I can easily bend the will of others to give me an element of surprise with a being she has no knowledge about. That could give me what I wish. Or, as I said: She could lose her powers or be bound to her own contract by another. I'm sure it's possible." Choushin said, knowing that some of his abilities the daemon wouldn't know he has.

The banter and debate that went on between the two was absolutely fascinating, and the crane stood silently back while he absorbed the information that was being divulged on a topic that he knew very little about. < couldn't tear himself away from it, nor could he find a place for him to speak up. He wouldn't have any input of his own anyhow!
However, as the discussion went on, he grew to find this rather untrue. The bird lifted a wing, primaries brushing up against his bill, then swept over his head as he brushed down a few feathers that had strayed out of place, waiting for a point when he could voice his question.
"Please pardon my intrusion," the avian spoke again at last, "but I don't understand: why don't you simply request the contract be dissolved? Surely that would be far easier than trying to find ways to best one another." He'd offered up that option earlier, but the mention must have gone unheard; admittedly, he'd become distracted himself.

"Braggart" The dragon stated coldly, made uncomfortable by the fox's way of talking about himself, while the powers he chose to mention made her skin crawl. She found him way too confident in his own abilities and luck for his own good. If he ended up losing because of that she wouldn't be surprised at all.
Of course this daemon lore was just as disturbing. This talk about forced contracts, and soul eating did nothing to relax the dragon. Stuff like the soul and the mind were supposed to be sacred. It was upsetting to know that some beings would mess with either without a second thought.
"It says in the book that its extremely rare for daemons to break their contracts." The slender dragon continued to scan the pages carefully. "If you consider the rest of the lore here to be true too, its not in their best interests since that's how they net souls."

"Well, someone has to see if you can even break a contract, and if it has to be me, then it can be used as knowledge for others and future generations to use." Choushin said, letting out a yawn. "At least I have more knowledge on what I'm working with, which is a start." He added.

"Don't believe everything you read," said the bird, a hard thing for him to say. Much as he liked to rely on books, authors were themselves fallible and prone to mistakes.
He stepped forward and stole a glance at the book itself, flipping through some of the pages himself before returning it to the place that the mammal had left it at. It looked like a compendium on various species, which meant that the data therein had to have been condensed and focused--and therefore may be missing some important bits of information.
"The book's not a full article. Daemons referenced could have been bad eggs, and the contracts could have all been done about the wrong way. Surely there's something other than souls they seek?"
He looked towards the child as he spoke once more, nodding. "You're right: you should be planning for all possibilities.
"Actually...," he continued, pausing, thinking. "If your daemon here really isn't the amiable sort, perhaps we could fool her rather than overpower her. So far it sounds like she holds all the cards." He turned back to the quadruped. "What does that book say on how many contracts a daemon can hold at once? How do they keep track of the souls under their wing?"

"it says nothing on that." The dragon answered firmly regarding the quantity of contracts a daemon could hold. She knew it was an overview article but the authors were generally creditable for this serious of books. Left other citations too when they had access to them too. There'd be more to find if she really wanted to trace the references back, but she'd lost much of her persistent energy after the fox had cotton cocky about his powers.
