THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? Despite having set up the plan himself, Haise was late. He made sure to change half an hour in advance so he wouldn't have to worry about rushing to decide on an outfit. He settled on something nice today; a white short sleeve cable knit sweater, a gray cardigan that fell a bit above his knees, black pants, and a long plaid sweater nearly as long as his cardigan. Though, since he had so much time left, he sat down and toyed around with his gaming console for a little longer than he should have. He'd only noticed the time fifteen minutes after the planned arrival time, and ended up hurrying to get there anyway.
Unfortunately, Haise was one of those drivers--the type that thinks they're always in the right and ends up honking excessively and cutting people off. He found himself cussing under his breath far too often for someone who wasn't even on the road for very long. One would have guessed it; of course, Haise had gotten into a quarrel with someone who rear ended his car. To be frank, that didn't end well. Considering that the other driver seemed to be in his early thirties and he was only seventeen at the time, well... putting it mildly, he learned to stop presenting his middle finger to every 'bad' driver he came across.
He screeched to a halt in the parking lot, checking the time which was now twenty-three minutes over the plan, and made haste towards the cafe. He knew exactly where it was nestled; despite it being so tiny, he had visited it a numerous amount of times, so he thought it would be a cozy place for them to settle. The best thing was that it was never too crowded; a hidden gem, really. It was a surprise he and Echo never ran into each other there.
Pushing through the doors, Haise ran his fingers through his hair with a short sigh. The warmth brought him comfort from the bitter outdoors, and he turned to see Echo and Mars located at a table not too far from him. He was about to begin approaching when midway through he noticed Echo's wallet, to which he cursed, "Goddammit," as he recalled that he left his own wallet at home. Was he going to have to owe someone money? What a pain. Not to mention how bad it made him look.
Sighing once more, this time for a different reason, he continued towards their table, not taking a seat just yet as he greeted them with a short nod. "...Hey. Sorry I'm late," he muttered, now irritated at himself. "I hurried to get here and ended up forgetting my wallet. If one of you could buy me something, I could pay you back sometime tomorrow." He then briefly remembered Echo mentioning that she would bring enough for all of them, but... making other people--acquaintances, at that--pay for him was something he despised. What an embarrassing way to begin this day...

MY LIFE GOES ON SO I'LL ROT AWAY HERE; A TIME MACHINE WOULD BE NICE YEARS FLY BY BUT I'M LIVING, 'FRAID OF DYING & HOPING OF 'MAYBE SOMEDAY' Echo Mariki was about to respond with answer but Haise seemed to walk in just in time. A small breath of relief came from her as she saw him. "Mmm, that's fine. I'll buy us all drinks and snacks. What would you guys like to have?" questioned Echo with a tilt of her head. Taking out her wallet from her pockets in her jacket, she brought out fifty dollars. It was all for precaution. Echo didn't know if they had expensive tastes or fast metabolisms. Either way, the girl did not mind at all.
A small smile was on her face. Today seemed to be the day where the girl wasn't buzzing with overexcitement either. The smooth jazz seemed to bring her hyperactivity down and settle her nerves for something more rational. Her outfit was composed of a white button up shirt, black skirt, leggings, and a jacket. Echo didn't have time to wear any accessories today so she decided to go without them. "You don't have to pay me back either." stated the girl as began to get up and order, if they were ready to respond.
She didn't mind paying; after all, the girl insisted on going and picked out the place. It was all her treat in favor to mend the bad vibes that happened yesterday. Hopefully, it would go much smoother today as they studied here. As much as she liked to have a part in drama, Echo disliked confrontation. The pale female preferred to have a spot in the back, only initiating the start of a big collapse for the rest of them. It was all for her personal enjoyment really. The girl only wanted to figure out if the people she hung out with were her friends. Although, Echo had gotten past doing things like that. It was a bad habit she managed to remove.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL mars looked up as haise arrived, dressed up fairly nicely. now that he thought about it, echo was wearing nice clothes too - it made him regret throwing clothes on at random in his haste to leave on time. he didn't even know what he had on beneath his sweatshirt. then again, his only fancy clothing was feminine; skirts and blouses and the like, for when family he wasn't out to was visiting. wearing that would most likely warrant an explanation he wasn't ready to give. so either way, it wasn't like he'd be wearing anything different from his normal attire.
"hey." was all he replied with, echo having beaten him to the rest of the talking. he observed as echo pulled her wallet out, a small flicker of surprise on his face. that was a lot, wasn't it? then again, he hadn't eaten out in what felt like eons. for the most part, he subsisted on microwave meals and cup noodle. not exactly a healthy way to live, but the cheapest one.
at her question, he shrugged. "whatever's cheapest, i guess." he stated, hardly glancing at the menu. he wasn't a very picky eater, so it wasn't like it mattered. he did wonder if echo would try to combat that - urge him to choose a drink and snack that he wanted. that had happened in the past, on the few occasions he actually went out. he usually ended up giving in in the end, if only to please them.
now that he thought about it, echo seemed less energetic today. still happy, but not as hyperactive. maybe, since she was more mellow right now, she'd just let it slide. he wasn't sure, really; he had never seen her like this before. it was a bit unnerving that, at this point, she was entirely unpredictable right now, but he pushed down his unease. what would it matter, in the end?

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? To his surprise, Echo seemed more relaxed than usual. Perhaps yesterday something good had happened and this was how she usually acted? Well, the reason didn't matter to him. All he knew was that it meant she might be less annoying today, and that was all he cared about. He didn't intend to get all buddy-buddy with her, after all; he was just interested in Mars.
Hearing her offer to pay for him, he took advantage of it with a short nod. If it meant not spending money, then that was fantastic. Still, he hated to make an awful impression, but as he saw Echo pull out fifty dollars, he thought otherwise. The hell? How rich is she? he thought. Then again, he wasn't awfully surprised--from the way she dressed, both yesterday and today (albeit she wasn't wearing anything extra today), she clearly wasn't short on money.
Haise acknowledged Mars' response, gazing over at the menu. As she added onto her response, Haise was tempted to counter with 'you sure?' but decided against it. "Right, thanks. Give me a sec to decide." He was surprised as Mars gave a rather vague response. Did he just not know what to pick? Personally, Haise didn't get that--he was decisive and always had an opinion in mind. He wondered if Mars just said that to be modest.
He paused, turning from the list of drinks and snacks to look at Mars. "Is there anything specific you like?" he queried. "Their frappes are pretty good and always a safe choice. They've also got some teas and lemonades. Dunno if you're into caffeine, but the cold brews are good too." While speaking, he gestured to the menu. After all, 'whatever's cheapest' didn't sound like a very promising order. Of course, he didn't intend to shove an order down his throat--he just wanted to find something Mars might like was all.
Turning back to Echo after deciding on his own order, he said, "I know what I want, so whenever you guys are ready." He mentally rehearsed what he wanted in his head, waiting for the others to pick as he shifted his bag off his shoulder, setting it down near their seating area so that nobody else would occupy it.

MY LIFE GOES ON SO I'LL ROT AWAY HERE; A TIME MACHINE WOULD BE NICE YEARS FLY BY BUT I'M LIVING, 'FRAID OF DYING & HOPING OF 'MAYBE SOMEDAY' For once, the girl would agree with Haise. The cheapest things here were cocoa and a pack of snacks. Surely that wouldn't hold up Mars' appetite for the time they spent here. Echo would speak up with a raise of eyebrows. "It's all up to you, but like he said you might want to try something more specific."
She was lightly amused Haise didn't try to counter her with a question reassuring her that he would pay her back. Well, not everyone had lots of money like her. Some of it wasn't even her own that she earned. The girl did work whenever she could as she applied for part time jobs though. With a small sigh on her lips, she would begin to wait for Mars' reply.
Her gaze would move to the two who were there. Mars looked as if he thrown on whatever he had. It didn't matter though. A lot of people did that. He might have been in a rush like Haise seemed to be. It was her fault she scheduled it early. Haise made an attempt to wear something nice and casual. She had to admit he had a sense of style. As for herself, Echo didn't really have a sense of style and preferred monotone colors.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL it was a bit unexpected to have haise be the one questioning him - mars had figured that if anyone did, it would be echo. it seemed like the other knew about the place, though. he racked his memories, wondering if haise had mentioned knowing the cafe, but he couldn't remember for certain if he had.
"you've been here before?" he asked, scratching at his scar as he spoke. after a more thorough read-through of the menu, he added, "to be honest, all coffee tastes the same to me. i don't really have a preference. i'll go with tea, i guess." he rarely ever drank tea, so perhaps it'd be interesting. it helped that tea was one of the cheaper things on the menu, anyways, albeit a bit above the cocoa. he decided on the flavor at random - he didn't actually know what any of them were like.
after browsing the snack section and deciding against getting anything from it - he wasn't a fan of sweet things - he stood, leaving his bag on his chair like haise had. he gave a glance around the cafe as they moved forward, studying its inhabitants. only a few people were around, most likely due to its somewhat hidden location. the low murmur of their conversations mixed with the jazz in the background, creating a somewhat soothing environment. he could see why echo and haise appeared to like it, although it wasn't exactly his kind of place; even he found himself calm.
he hung back slightly, just so that he would hopefully be the last of them to order. it wasn't that ordering food caused him any extra anxiety or anything - it was simply a move he made without thinking. putting others before him, even if it was a casual situation such as this. that was how the situation with his mother made him think; he was just a tool for others to use to further themselves.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? Haise didn't think much of Echo's response, simply nodding once more in agreement as he let his eyes continue lingering on the menu for a bit longer, mostly as a way to wait for Mars' reply. When he answered, Haise was tempted to cry, you don't taste a difference in coffee? but decided to leave that conversation for later. He didn't want to offend him, anyway; Haise often got passionate about his opinions, and he feared guilt-tripping others. ...Well, sometimes. Other times, he fired away with his opinions, free of guilt.
Answering his first question, he stated, "Mhm. Been going here since the beginning of the school year for my daily fix of caffeine. You know college life." His statement was spoken in amusement, but his dull expression might have made them think otherwise. "Are we talking hot tea? I can't imagine you getting iced tea in this weather, but..." He glanced through the window, snow lightly sprinkled along the pavement outside, then looked back at Mars and shrugged. "All of them are pretty good, but I like their fruit teas the best. Don't get the Irish breakfast one, though--that one has a weird aftertaste." He found himself rambling because of his extensive knowledge on the cafe. Much to his chagrin, he stopped, feeling somewhat awkward for going on talking for so long.
He glanced at the two, stating, "I'll go ahead and order first, if Echo has us covered." Her name still felt awkward on his tongue, and it would get some getting used to, assuming he needed to talk to her any longer. Of course, as he had thought before, he wasn't interested in spending more time around her.
Approaching the cashier, his hands tucked into the pockets of his cardigan, he stated, "Hi. Could I get a 24oz Kyoto cold brew? And um... roast beef ciabatta." As the worker punched in his order in the register and queried 'anything else?', he turned to the other two and waited for them to place their own orders.

MY LIFE GOES ON SO I'LL ROT AWAY HERE; A TIME MACHINE WOULD BE NICE YEARS FLY BY BUT I'M LIVING, 'FRAID OF DYING & HOPING OF 'MAYBE SOMEDAY' "I'll have a black coffee with a side of a cinnamon roll. Thank you." spoke Echo as she approached the cashier. She distanced herself from Haise, preferring to keep personal space at maximum between them. The girl would wait for Mars to respond with his answer. He lagged behind them in an anxious act or maybe a polite one. Echo couldn't guess.
Haise had extensive knowledge on this place or what they had. He must have been here as much as she did. Although, Echo only ordered things she was familiar with or searched up herself. She didn't want to waste money on things she would end up throwing away. The girl checked her pockets for her phone. It was there as usual. As of the money, it was clasped in her hands.
Everything will go well, won't it? It probably will go as planned. There would be no more stress or bad vibes. She could be sure of it. Everything was currently going by smoothly. The time sure went by fast to her. Was it already in the afternoon? When she got here, it was pretty early. She didn't pay much attention to the time though.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL mars listened to haise's words, giving small nods occasionally. it made sense - cafes usually were the first place college students tended to flock to. as for mars, he stuck to red bull; not necessarily out of choice, but it was what happened to be in reach at home. he had received warnings about how bad it was for his health, but he simply didn't care enough about that in comparison to his work.
haise abruptly stopped talking, but mars didn't think much of it. he observed quietly as his two companions ordered, noticing that echo appeared to attempt to distance herself from haise. what was that about? she didn't seem like the kind of person to be wary of contact. or he was over-thinking again. whatever the issue was, it didn't include him.
"i'll have the honey lemon tea. and the ham and swiss cheese sandwich. i think that's it." he glanced over at echo for confirmation, moving towards haise to make room for her to pay. he hadn't originally planned on getting food, to go with it, but now that he thought about it, he was getting hungry. in his hurry, he had dashed out without breakfast, and at a glance at his phone, he could confirm that it was definitely approaching the time he normally ate lunch.
the sheer oddness of the situation hit him - he was somewhere besides home that wasn't college or the pharmacy. he was out with not one but two people, and one of those two for sure considered him a friend. he couldn't remember the last time he had done something like this; especially with more than one person. compared to his usual habits, it was almost hard to believe that this was reality.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? Truthfully, Haise hadn't noticed Mars let them go ahead; he was used to shoving forward and going first, so it was inevitable that he didn't acknowledge his humility. As the cashier finished up their order and rounded up the total, he waited for Echo to pay the cashier, and then he would turn and head back to their seats.
Taking the seat next to Mars, Haise sighed as he recalled why they were here--to study. What a pain. He only wanted to talk with Mars and Mars alone, but no, that girl had to come up with the genius idea of studying. Who the hell thought that would be a good idea? Changing the plan from a relaxing chat to a study date when she wasn't even the one who came up with the plan... the thought of it made him click his tongue subconsciously.
Not to mention how oddly far she stood from him. What was she thinking? Why does she seem so disgusted by me? he thought bitterly. Not like I'm a fan of her, but damn. It's like she doesn't even like the thought of me. Of course, he was jumping to conclusions. Who knew, maybe she just liked space, maybe she liked to feel independent when she was ordering, maybe it had nothing to do with him. But there was always that little possibility that it did have to do with him, and that was enough to have him believe it.
He didn't say anything as they sat, simply waiting for likely Echo to begin their little study session. He intended to study as minimally as possible. He knew he needed it, but he could never focus--especially when they would get their food, he wouldn't be paying attention in the slightest. He supposed he'd have to withstand it as best as he could... perhaps he could actually get a little head start for his next tests.

MY LIFE GOES ON SO I'LL ROT AWAY HERE; A TIME MACHINE WOULD BE NICE YEARS FLY BY BUT I'M LIVING, 'FRAID OF DYING & HOPING OF 'MAYBE SOMEDAY' The girl would nod towards Mars in acknowledgement of his order, before going up to pay. She would soon find herself handing the money and receiving the change in return. They stated they would bring the order to them when they were done as well. The action saved them from half the hassle honestly and she thought she'd have to receive it all at once. It looked like that was only for to-go orders.
Echo would begin walking towards the seats, hoping Mars would soon follow. They should begin their study session sooner or later before dusk rolled in. Either way, the girl didn't seem to care whether or not they were going to study. She already had studied and caught up with everything yesterday. Today's schedule was only used to get ahead or do something other than studying. Soon enough, she would sit down in a chair across from Haise's. Echo would leave the latter to Mars.
As she waited for the order, the girl would check her messages on her phone. If one of them brought on a conversation, Echo would gladly join in. She didn't mind talking to either one of them. It didn't matter to her. She was kinda 'out of her mind' bored or restless to do something other than lounge around.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL mars sat down as echo ordered, haise sitting next to him. since it looked like they wouldn't be getting their food immediately, he decided to start studying. he had a paper due for one of his classes fairly soon, and he hadn't actually done very much of it done yet; between sleep and taking care of his mother, combined with work from other classes, he simply hadn't had the time. he frowned as he unzipped his bag, though, met with an unpleasant sight.
"shit. i left my laptop at home." he sighed, poking around in the bag despite the fact that it obviously wasn't in there. he couldn't believe hadn't noticed as he had shoved the cash inside earlier, but he had been more focused on leaving than on packing things up. he hadn't brought anything else, either - he had wanted to focus on the paper.
he wasn't really sure what to do now - not that he had known before, either, seeing as he had never studied with anyone else before. he was saved by the immediate situation as the drinks arrived, with the statement that the food would be there shortly. he murmured his thanks, sipping from his tea.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? Like Echo, Haise pulled out his phone first rather than his studying materials. Though, this was mostly just a way of getting out of studying--he'd already checked most of his social media prior to this, so when he finished looking through the new content, he was stuck pretending like there was still something he had to look at. With a reluctant sigh, he powered it off, setting it down on the table right as Mars spoke.
He left his laptop at home? Well, what a shame. Looks like we can't study, Haise thought to himself while pondering on an acceptable response to his statement. He had brought his own, so he began to volunteer, "I've got mine, but it's a Macbook." He found the last part of his sentence to be necessary, since people would often say 'how do you use this thing?' when he offered it to them. "I've got algebra to do, so I don't really need it." It was a half lie. He had to type up several assignments soon, but algebra was due tomorrow, and he didn't need his laptop for that except for when he needed to search up the answers to 'make sure his were right'.
Before Mars replied, a worker brought over their food, to which Haise would give his thanks and gratefully accept the food. He wasted no time taking a bite into his sandwich, becoming apparent of his growing hunger. It was fortunate their service was so fast here--those were the perks of small cafes, he supposed. He sipped at his cold brew, leaning back with a short sigh before looking over at Mars. "What do you think of it?" he queried, mostly referring to the drink despite his ambiguity.

MY LIFE GOES ON SO I'LL ROT AWAY HERE; A TIME MACHINE WOULD BE NICE YEARS FLY BY BUT I'M LIVING, 'FRAID OF DYING & HOPING OF 'MAYBE SOMEDAY' In the few minutes that passed by, Mars was surely going to be happy he didn't bring his laptop. She allowed them to speak for awhile until she began to get up for something and hit the table with her knee. Her streak of unluckiness had aroused and her cup of coffee aimed itself upon whatever was in front of her. It wasa aimed for the laptop. Oh, fucking Christ. Echo's mouth was in a tight pursed 'o' form and her eyebrows were raised at their maximum length it could go up. Damn, she was screwed.
So goddammit screwed for what was going to be unleashed. Haise was going to unleash his full salt spill and kill her in one blow. "I-I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it. Oh god, I'll pay for it you know. I promise, h-eh?" spoke the girl with a small bow of her head. She was scared and ready to scream back at him. Whether it may be in tears to receive pity from others or simply join in on his yelling and get them kicked out, she was going to do it. If his fist were raised, she was going to thwack him with her bag and run away with or without Mars. Echo might as well as look ready to cry and die. It more the latter though.
Somewhere inside of her, she hoped this didn't seem as she did it all for a plan. The girl didn't plan for the drink to spill all over his stuff and on the table. For now, Echo would sneak away to get some napkins and ready herself for what would happen next. It was a good thing she was stocked on whatever money she had. Echo would certainly need it for this mistake. People would distantly stare than resume their normal activities. They probably presumed all of them were a group of friends who had each other's back.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL mars hadn't been expecting a response - in all honesty, he had been talking mostly to himself - but he was grateful for haise's words. before he could respond, the rest of their food arrived. "thanks. and that's fine." he stated, moving for the computer. he nibbled on the sandwich, gazing at the macbook. he didn't exactly know how to work one, but he wasn't particularly fond of asking for help. oh well. he'd figure it out eventually.
at haise's question, assuming he meant the drink - based on their earlier discussion - he shrugged, simply saying, "it's alright." explaining that his apathy had grown to the point where he rarely ever felt enjoyment seemed like it would be too long of a discussion, so it was easier to go with a non-answer of sorts. hopefully the other wouldn't mind.
just as he had started to figure out how to work the computer, the table shook. the moment he saw the coffee running down the length of it, he jumped up to avoid staining his clothing. he thought about grabbing the laptop, too, but his reflexes were too slow. echo was already nervously stammering out a reply, and judging by her reaction, it certainly seemed like it had been an accident - she looked terrified.
he didn't say much, grabbing a handful of napkins to get started on the mess. they were running low, but it looked like echo was attempting to slip away to grab more. his eyes flitted towards haise, wondering how the demiboy would react. from what he understood, haise was more the aggressive type - not that he had acted that way towards him, but based on his habit of getting into fights. assuming it was a habit, anyways. maybe the one fight had been a fluke. who knew? but regardless, mars was braced for yelling. better safe than sorry.
