(Do not consider this a finished thread yet, maybe not even ever.)
When the Heart of Magic...
Is combined with the Heart of Potential...
A new step begins in a cycle of infinite possibilities.
The Amalgan
The Amalgan. A curious, magical race, that seems to have a penchant for fusing with other species, most preferring those of humanoid shape. In their base states, they can be as small as a mouse, or as large as a small dog. No two Amalgan possess the exact same appearance, except for perhaps twins. Their appearances are exceptionally varied, most appearing to be mammals that vary from a fair normal animal-like appearance, to having all sorts of extras. Reptilian, bird, and other types of base Amalgan do exist, though.
In their base states, they seem to have a similar rate of aging to humans, becoming physically mature at the age of eighteen years-which is also the age that most of them are physically able to fuse with other beings at-and, so on. In their first base states, some want to look for their 'bond partner' as soon as they can, while others may wait a while longer, allow themselves to gain more experience before going into their first or next amalgamation.
There are a number of reasons an Amalgan might want to fuse: Longer Lifespan, new experience, a combined take on life, new magical abilities, and a new personality.
But, most new Amalgan choose to go with humans for a number of reasons as well. Sure, maybe it would be something to try and fuse with, say, an angel, for example. But, in all their race's years, the Amalgan have never quite met a race they felt more in than the humans, oddly enough: Ambitious, Diverse, Incredibly varied, and, the results all the many Base Amalgan/Human Amalgamations have brought. While the most power hungry Amalgan might be tempted by the power of a stronger seeming race, there is still a decent to large probability that they'll go human.
Most seem to dislike going to places like Eokia, considering these to be boring hubs, where most magical beings cower from the 'horrifying persecution of human science'. Granted, most Amalgan can be incredibly biased about these sorts of things, but, even as magical creatures themselves, they don't seem to act as if they have that much reason to fear human places, even such as Sanctuary.
Maybe because they don't...? In Sanctuary, there are definitely a few conspiracy theorists, who have described creatures similar to Base Amalgan and 'True'/Amalgamated Amalgan, who believe they have infiltrated not only the government and military of Sanctuary, but the A.A.A.A. as well! These might seem ludicrous, at least in the cases of the first and third, but, the Amalgan have had an interest in humans for a very long time, and, have probably been fusing with them for only a tiny bit less than that. Could it be possible that there are a large number of secret Amalgan in Sanctuary, who have been around long enough to adapt to even some of the stronger sensors?
Well, shapeshifting and illusion magic are definitely two more species wide powers in the reportoire of the Amalgan, along with some degree of time travel, and the ability to teleport inbetween places, including their own world and others, so, who knows?
The Amalgamated
The Amalgamated, or the 'True' Amalgan, is probably the state most anticipated by the Amalgan. They usually like to get on their fellow fusee's back, and magically merge with them into a new being. In the case of them fusing with most non-human beings, the new 'True' Amalgam will usually have a combination of both the former base state's and the co-fusee's powers. But, in the case of a Base Amalgan and Human merging to a new 'True' Amalgam, there's a heavy likelihood that the new being will have new powers, one of the reasons for the old Amalgan saying about the two hearts and a new step in the cycle of infinite possibilities.
Personality wise, the being that exists post-fusion, a 'True' Amalgan, will tend to have a personality based on those of it's previously existing components. For example, a stern, serious, yet not completely without humor Base Amalgan, and a fun-loving, humourous human, who knows when things stop being funny, might make for a 'True' Amalgan with a fairly balanced personality.
Appearance wise, the Amalgamated being's true form will look like a hybrid between the Amalgan and its fusion partner. In the case of an amalgamation with a human/humanoid, they will have a bipedial/anthro physiology, as well as have some physical characteristics very much like the Base Amalgan component's, but, ultimately, for the most, an Amalgan/humanoid amalgamation will have a human face, and, in areas mostly populated by full humans, they will shapeshift to the appearance of their human component's formerly existing form.
Amalgamation greatly increases the lifespan of both parties. In the case of Amalgam/Human fusions, they can live up to two hundred years, in an adult prime for at least the first hundred years of their existence, before they start aging. At 150, they will start regaining their youth, but also slowly changing to a new base form, that will be based not only the previous based form, but, on genetic factors from both sides. At 200 years of age, the 'True' Amalgan becomes a new Base Amalgan in an adult prime stage of life. This cycle seems infinite, and, most people who know about them-The Amalgan themselves included-doubt that Amalgan can truly die of age, as long as they do their best to stay healthy, and continue fusing.
A 'True' Amalgan's new name will be part of it's Base Amalgan's component's name, as well all/part of the other component's name. Even when an Amalgan merges into a new being, it will never truly give up it's old selves, The Amalgan race possessing looongggg memories. True Amalgan also literally possess two hearts-at least in the case of the Amalgan/Human ones-the Base Amalgan's, and the other's. As they start heading back toward to a Base Amalgan state, the hearts start moving closer, and merging together, becoming one new heart.
