I've been roleplaying for 7 years or so. It started out as image based rp using a nintendo dsi software called flipnote studio + flipnote hatena. We'd draw our own characters and chain stories into a larger whole like a comic book with 1-2 images per page. some of the characters I still use now were born there, and only are seeing new life now on AR
After that I moved to a forum site for warrior cats roleplay following a friend, though it soon became semi fantasy, any animal roleplay instead, with all sorts of powers and mutations. It was fine for a while, I played a handful of traditional and nontraditional animals there, and was having fun for a while, but staff changes lead to an environment where members did not trust staff, and staff handling of drama only served to make more drama It became a sitewide storm of frustration. Both members and other staff ended up quitting in droves. Because of them I am a bit spoiled with animal rp. All my favorite characters from that place are too mutated to use on most other animal sites, except for a small handful of them, and as my character count rose, I've become more and more the type to reuse characters where possible.
Leaving that site was hard for me, and killed my muse for quite a while afterward. I lurked in a few places and chatted with the remaining member base of the group I was in there via skype.
As we figured out what we wanted in a roleplay site, we ended up deciding to start AR. The focus of the site has gradually changed as members show their interest but the spirit of this place over all has remained the same.
