THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? He simply offered a nod at Mars' response, sliding the laptop over to him and letting him work. He assumed Mars knew what he was doing, since he didn't seem hesitant to accept and didn't raise any questions. Well, he would be fine--as long as he didn't manage to delete his files and assignments, it would be okay.
Only alright? he thought at Mars' next statement. He thought the honey green tea didn't sound too bad, but based off of his nonchalant reply, he mostly assumed that Mars didn't like it. Maybe it was too sweet. Or perhaps it didn't go with his sandwich? ...Well, he supposed it didn't concern him. It wasn't Haise's money that had been used, and it wasn't him who was eating or drinking those things. Mars would just have to manage with that.
The chatting steadily decreased between the trio, as Haise finished up a problem and proceeded to get confused on the next. He had read the problem over and over again, staring at the past problems he had done, flipping back in the paper booklet to see if he had completed anything similar, but he was still lost. He twirled his pencil--well, as best as he could; he couldn't fully spin it like he knew others could do--around between his fingers while thinking, when he noticed Echo beginning to get up. He would have questioned where she was going if he cared any more, but alas, he did not, so he kept his inquiries to himself. It wasn't until he heard something bang against the table, and suddenly there was the aroma of black coffee permeating the area, hastily spreading towards his papers, but more importantly, his laptop.
"Shit!" Haise yelled on instinct, standing up at the same time as Mars. He swiped his paper off the table and onto the chair he was sitting on, then reaching for his laptop. Much to his dismay, the bottom had already gotten soaked by the coffee, but the screen hadn't turned off yet. "God--for fuck's sake," he began to say under his breath, but still loud enough for him to sound angry. Lifting it up, he looked around for a place to set it, and ended up just putting it on the floor. Fortunately, he knew to shut it off before he did anything else with the laptop; otherwise he would have lost much important data.
When he looked up at the 'perpetrator', he glowered furiously, but her expression was full of horror and guilt. That, and the fact that they were in public in front of many other customers were the only things keeping him from yelling at her. He was enraged, even if he hadn't lost anything yet--nevermind that. Right now, he was running through the worst case scenarios in his mind, worried that he would lose everything and have to restart on every essay and document he had written. Thankfully, before he had a chance to say anything more, Echo was making haste to fetch some more napkins. His teeth clamped down on his inner cheek, but he was too angry to help out cleaning up the mess. He was in the mindset of 'it's your damn mess, clean it up on your own'. Of course, he'd eventually do something, but not right this second, so right now, he seethed.

MY LIFE GOES ON SO I'LL ROT AWAY HERE; A TIME MACHINE WOULD BE NICE YEARS FLY BY BUT I'M LIVING, 'FRAID OF DYING & HOPING OF 'MAYBE SOMEDAY' Echo would feel his gaze strike her. He was upset. Very upset. A sheepish look was on her features. She knew she darn right fucked up and scaled up on Haise's 'Top 10 People I'd Like to Avoid for the Rest of My Life.' Nevertheless, the girl would clean up her mess with a bunch of paper towels in her hands.
Her gaze was casted low, avoiding to make contact with anyone as she did so. She would mentally berate herself for doing so. The girl would have to set a reminder to repay Haise with a new laptop, if she convinced her family to lend her money out of the bank's deposit. Perhaps there could be a lesson learned from this like if a risky situation is present, ignore all bodily functions telling you to use the restroom. There weren't going to be any more chances given to become his friend now. At most, they were frenemies. At least, they were strangers.
Mars seemed calm about the situation. She appreciated that fact. He didn't seem to be the type of person to exclaim something unless in danger. Although, the girl could just be seeing things in a totally different aspect. It could also be her brain going to overdrive as it searched for ways to relieve herself from this issue. She'd have to search for a way to repay him. It wasn't as if the food and drinks were enough.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL mars had jumped at haise's shout - yelling was somewhat foreign to him, seeing as he never really did things to be yelled at for. there was the occasion that his mom would chew him out whenever she got into one of her moods, but she never really rose in volume the same way haise had. he had recovered quickly, resuming his cleaning the table.
to his relief, although haise glowered at echo, he didn't yell more. if they fought, it could result in them being kicked out the cafe. it would be more of a hassle than anything. of course, it was possible he was simply saving his rage for later, but that didn't matter at the moment. what mattered was getting the mess cleaned up.
"is your laptop alright?" he asked, nodding at the macbook on the floor. it looked like haise had turned it off, but he wasn't sure if that would save it or not. he never really had food around his technology, so it wasn't like he had ever had to deal with something like this before. he hated not being able to predict the outcome, but that was how things were.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? He would have thanked Mars for helping clean up, but he was too frustrated to express gratitude; if anything, he wanted to ask Echo 'how the hell did you manage to knock over your drink within the five damn minutes we were sitting down?', and maybe say, 'could you have been anymore clumsy?', along with a, 'you weren't even studying, what the hell were you doing?!'. Though, if he did that... it wouldn't satisfy him at all. Instead, he wouldn't be surprised if she started crying based on how she acted earlier--not to mention how Mars would probably end up hating him for being so harsh. He had to bite it down now to keep from regretting anything later.
He turned upon hearing Mars' voice, then looked down at his sorry laptop with a bitter laugh. "Hell if I know," he grunted, his anger evidently directed towards Echo and not Mars. Without his laptop, Mars couldn't study, and it didn't even look like Echo wanted to study, so why should he be doing any work? If anything, he wanted to study the least out of them; Mars was a diligent student and Echo was the one who brought up the idea of studying, but if neither of them intended to, he might as well have left his bag at home.
Frustrated, he sighed, moving towards his algebra papers to tuck them back into his binder, zipping up his backpack. He grabbed his laptop, along with a few napkins that Echo had brought, then did his best to wipe up the dampness of his laptop before it seeped into the hardware. The surface was still sticky after a bit of cleaning, but he figured he'd fix it up when he got home. Sliding it into his laptop case, he turned to them. Their food still seemed to be intact; it was mostly his laptop that was affected by the spill. How lucky of him. "Well? What do we do now?" he asked, gazing pointedly in Echo's direction.

"We just go home." She gave them both a brief smile that faded shortly afterwards. It was the best decision from here on out. The girl didn't want to suggest to reschedule either. They'd probably say no. Today was a fistful of regrets. Things she could have prevented.
Checking for her things in her pockets, the girl would be the first to leave. She didn't want to stay here any longer. It would be best for the two to be left alone. It didn't matter at all to her. The workers should have gotten her stuff anyways. It would be useless to give them the stuff they would get in total with their's later. Hopefully, the two wouldn't get kicked out. Whatever.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL haise's answer wasn't one he could easily think of a response too, so mars left it at that. he observed as the other cleaned up his papers and moved his laptop into his bag, reaching towards his sandwich to take a bite. there was no reason to let it go to waste, after all - and when you lived how mars did, every food item counted.
when haise spoke again, he was glaring at echo as he did so. "i don't mind doing whatever." mars responded, glancing at her, as well. seeing as he wasn't directly at fault, it wasn't like this situation was of any consequence to him; he was able to carry on like nothing had happened.
echo seemed down; her response was somewhat stern, and she appeared to have a hard time smiling. she left quickly, and mars stared after her, pondering. it didn't seem like there'd be a future hangout - judging on how this one had gone - but who knew? he wasn't entirely sure how this kind of thing worked, anyways. he'd never had more than one friend at once before.
turning back to haise, he said, "i'm gonna take off, then. unless you wanted to do something else?" he couldn't imagine haise doing anything other than going home and maybe taking his anger out on a boxing bag or some similar inanimate object, but then again, he had only been interacting with haise for a couple days at this point. the demiboy's personality was that of a mystery to him. although mars wasn't very good at accurately reading emotions, it appeared that the mood for the day had been dampened.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? He listened to Mars first, who was, as expected, very passive about his opinion. Was he really not that fazed? Even if he had been in Mars position where none of his belongings were affected, he'd still be disappointed in the immediate failure of this meetup. While he was the one to propose the idea of a little hangout, he completely blamed Echo for turning into it into a study date, and then spilling her drink all over the place. Right. She was the one in the wrong. Not him, never him.
Then, as though she were some sort of toddler, she promptly decided the outcome of the situation and then stormed out. Haise almost wanted to roll his eyes. That was it? They just go home? Of course, Haise was on edge and extremely frustrated, but didn't most people try to capitalize off of poor situations? ...Well, whatever. She was leaving, wasn't she? She exited without even another apology (though asking for more would be a bit rude) nor a goodbye; if that wasn't chagrin, he didn't know what was.
He felt his anger temporarily slipping away with her gone, although the feeling of aggression still lingered. That was when it suddenly occurred to him--it was just him and Mars now. He could make up for this! Though, Mars beat him to speaking, so Haise briefly thought about his reply before answering, "Yeah... I'd rather not do anything after that." Scratching the back of his neck with the hand that wasn't sticky from picking up his laptop, he fixated his gaze upon Mars, staring for a bit longer than he should have. It wasn't his appearance he was thinking about; he was mostly just surprised that the whole interaction didn't seem to have affected him at all, not positively or negatively. ...I want to get to know him, he thought for what felt like the millionth time, as though that thought didn't pass through his mind whenever they sat a few feet away from each other in classes.
Tearing himself away from his reverie, he urged himself to speak and uttered, "So... not today. But... I wanted to know if you wanted to try this again. Tomorrow. Without the studying." He was tempted to add without the Echo, too, but he decided against it. He was bitter enough as is; no need to badmouth Echo while she wasn't even here. Now, he just hoped Mars wouldn't bluntly decline him--what if Mars actually wanted to distance himself from Haise especially? Because of his irritability? In that case, surprised is something he couldn't describe himself as, no... it would be much more disappointing than a shock. There was a reason why Haise was never seen walking the campus with other people, after all. Who wanted to befriend someone as dislikable as himself?

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL there was a brief pause as haise appeared to think things over, but at his response, mars nodded. that was understandable - predictable, really. anyone, unless they were completely unable to be fazed, would want nothing more than to go home when something like that happened.
haise gazed at him for a while, and he stared back, rubbing at his scar. he wasn't sure how to react to it, in all honesty. he was stared at often for his hair and scar, but those weren't usually situations where he was required to interact. he appeared to relax as haise spoke again, saying, "that's fine with me." he was about to ask for more information, but was interrupted by the buzz of his phone. although he had been meaning to, he hadn't actually set a ringtone yet; he didn't listen to enough music to bother with finding a song and downloading it.
glancing down at the screen, he could see that he had a few missed calls, and texts were coming in rapidly. they were from his mother, of course; almost no one else had his number. opening the texts, it appeared that she had panicked when she had woken up alone. despite the numerous 'sweetheart's and 'dear's peppered in, her texts had an underlying 'answer me soon or else' vibe. the spam had started only a couple minutes ago, most likely during the panic with the laptop.
a small frown crept onto his features; he was already wondering whether she would accuse him of attempting to abandon her or if she'd just yell at him for not telling her he was leaving. he sighed, looking back up at haise. "sorry, my mom needs me. i better leave before she gets too pissed." with that, he hurried out of the cafe, only stopping to grab his sandwich.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? The feeling of waiting for a reply in uncertainty could turn a few seconds into what felt like decades. Would Mars harshly turn him down? Would he simply walk away? Would he laugh at him, even? ...God, it's not like I get this worked up with anyone else, he thought irritably. Of course, all of his worrying was for naught, because Mars responded coolly as usual; he could never really grasp Mars' actual opinion whenever he spoke because of his consistent monotony.
Though, before he could add anything more, suddenly Mars was whipping out his phone, seemingly frustrated by something, and he slipped away as quickly as Echo had. His mom needs him? he thought. Is he just using that as an excuse? I remember he mentioned her the other day... He merely watched as Mars headed off. Approaching his bags, Haise blinked. Instead of going home like the others had, Haise decided against it. He didn't rush over here for no reason, and he wanted to at least enjoy what he had ordered. Slowly, he sat himself back down, taking a bite of his sandwich and sighing as he zoned off, pondering their little unsuccessful outing.
-
He had texted Mars a bit late last night, having realized that he neglected to do so earlier. "Wanna meet up at the shopping center a few miles from school?" the text read. "Around the same time we met yesterday. By the main Starbucks." Fortunately, this time Haise had stuck accordingly to the planned time--if anything, he was a bit early, but that was thanks to his reckless driving. He didn't bother fixing up a new outfit; who cared if Mars saw him in the same thing? Haise didn't have a very large assortment of clothing after all, and he didn't want to go through the trouble of choosing new clothes if he had barely used them yesterday.
Now, he stood by the specified Starbucks, around six minutes early as he pushed through the doors. He managed a feeble smile to the worker who welcomed him from the register, and then seated himself at a two-person table. He wondered if Mars would bring money this time. Not that Haise had brought money yesterday either, but... he wouldn't mind paying for Mars, assuming he didn't spill it all over his phone or something. There, he examined the menu, wondering what to order, and how long it would take for Mars to get here.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL mars, unlike the previous day, had managed to wake up on time today; his mom hadn't been as needy that night as she had been before. although she had been upset at him, she had actually seemed to understand - more than anything, she appeared to be relieved that he had a social life. this morning, he had remembered to leave a note within reach of her to let her know that he would be gone again. hopefully that was enough to satisfy her.
he had dressed mostly the same as before; he wore a different shirt, but it wasn't like haise would even be able to tell unless he took his sweatshirt off, which was unlikely. although his binder kept him flat enough, he still preferred to have as many layers on as possible. it was cold out, anyways, so it was excusable. since he wouldn't need his bag - he had only taken it before for his laptop, which had failed anyways - he didn't grab it, although he did take the spare money out of it. he wasn't sure if haise was bringing any, so it was better safe than sorry, right?
he made it to the shopping center around the meet-up time, doing his best to ignore his aching legs - he had chosen to walk, a grave mistake - he found the starbucks quickly, heading inside. haise was easy to spot, being one of the only people sitting alone at a two-person table. he slid into the seat across from the other student, absently touching his scar as he spoke. "hey. sorry i'm a little late." he was only late by a few minutes, but he still felt the need to apologize. he had no idea whether or not it was something haise would get angry about, or even take personally.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? Haise heard his voice before he saw him sat down, not having realized he was zoning out when he was supposed to be deciding on what to get. Lazily shifting his gaze to settle upon him, he sported a puzzled countenance as he asked, "Oh, you're late?" Pressing the home button on his phone, the time flickered across the screen, to which he simply waved a hand. "By like, nothing. Don't worry about it." Leaning back, he turned his attention to Mars with a bit of a sleepy expression.
He had spent some time weighing out the pros and cons of this outing, though it was beginning to take a bit of a toll on him. Therefore, he started up his gaming console to get his mind off of things, but one thing came after another, and by the time he noticed the, well, time, it had magically became three in the morning. ...It'll be fine, he had thought, but ended up getting little sleep and rose very early. That certainly wasn't the best combination, especially since it was a weekend. Believe it or not, Haise still made an effort to study through the week. Unfortunately, they still resulted in what he believed were less-than-satisfactory grades, but the fact that he made en effort alone was enough for him. ...It was apparently enough for his new mother, too, who was much gentler, much kinder with him.
"So, wanna get drinks? I was thinking we could just walk around the shops, maybe go inside a few," he explained, reaching into his pocket to pull out a black leather wallet. In the slots were an abundance of gift cards, whether it be for clothing stores, restaurants, you name it--it was most likely he had it. This was because gift cards were a go-to present, whether it be for Christmas, his birthday, any other occasions... he always received them from family because they never knew what to buy him. It was either that, or clothes, but that was a bit of a rarer occasion since he was a bit picky with fashion.
Sliding out one of his $20 Starbucks cards that he hadn't used yet, he said, "If you do want anything, it's on me. As long as you don't pour it all over my bag or something." At this, he finished the sentence with upturned lips; a hint of a smile to show that he was simply teasing.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL mars watched as haise nonchalantly waved his hand, dismissing mars' late arrival. "okay." was all he said in response. if haise said not to worry about it, he wasn't going to. it appeared that haise was tired; perhaps that was why he hadn't been paying attention to the time. either way, mars had gotten off scot-free, which was new to him, considering his mother's reactions.
"that sounds fine." he stared at the gift cards in the wallet curiously, wondering where all of them had come from; his own family didn't spend money on gifts very often, saving all they could to keep his mother alive. the more distant relatives simply didn't care enough to send anything. both sides of the family were more detached, preferring to keep to immediate members.
surprisingly, haise pulled out a starbucks card, indicating that it was for him. mars hesitated on the offer, but accepted it after a moment of thought - it wasn't like haise was spending actual earned money on him, just gift cards most likely from a family member. he nodded, patting the pocket he had put his own money in. "thanks. if we end up needing more, i brought spare cash, too." he wasn't sure how to respond to the joke, so he left things at that.
"so, where do you want to go first?" it seemed like they were gearing up to go to the starbucks, but it felt better to ask just in case. it'd be awkward if they ended up trying to go to two different place, after all.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? He nodded along to Mars' replies, rather relieved that Mars didn't turn down his offer to pay for his drinks. At his question, Haise pondered on it for a bit. "Mm... there wasn't really anywhere in particular? We could just look around 'til we find something." In truth, he did have some ideas in mind, but he didn't want to bore Mars; Haise was mainly interested in clothing stores, and he wasn't sure if Mars would be nearly as intrigued as he was.
"For now, I'm gonna get something to drink. Do you know what you want?" he queried, standing up to head towards the line. He waited on Mars' response, realizing that he himself still hadn't chosen a drink. There seemed to be some seasonal Christmas drinks being advertised, so his eyes traveled to the chestnut praline latte and remained there. It sounded like a good choice.
He continued pondering what they should do after this. He would have asked if Mars wanted to get an actual lunch, but Haise didn't have the money to cover both of them. Mars had said he brought money, but he hadn't an idea of how much. Though, he decided asking wouldn't hurt; he wouldn't know what Mars' preferences were if he never said anything. "Oh, but on second thought, we could also get actual lunch. Are you hungry?" He turned his attention back to Mars.

I HAVE NO LOVE BUT ONLY GOALS, & OH HOW VERY EMPTY IS MY SOUL IT IS A SOUL THAT FEELS NO THRILL, A SOUL THAT COULD EASILY KILL "sounds good to me," he said, shrugging. he had a feeling that the shopping trip would be more beneficial for haise than for himself no matter what; he almost never bought any item that wasn't absolutely essential. the one exception was books on war - he would purchase it at the loss of almost anything else without a second thought if it came to that.
in response to the question, mars let out a small hum, his eyes drifting towards the board that listed drinks and the like. none of the options particularly stood out to him, but he decided to go for a caramel macchiato. besides the caramel part, he had no idea of what it entailed, but he had to choose something.
before he could speak, though, haise was turning towards mars, a query leaving his lips. mars gave another small shrug in response. "either way works for me," he stated. "we could just eat here, if you want? or we could see what the other restaurants around here are like." he had no idea if haise knew the shopping center well or not, but if he did, maybe they'd be able to choose quicker. he, personally, didn't have a preference at all; seeing as he'd never set foot in any of them.

THESE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD ARE SPINNING ROUND & ROUND 'CAUSE ALL OF THAT PRIDE YOU HOLD IS TROUBLING, YOU KNOW? Deciding for the cheaper option, Haise gave a short shrug of his shoulders. "Well, since we're already here, I'm good with eating at this place." It was too much of a hassle to try and find another restaurant, he was thinking. Not to mention cheaper... he didn't want to find his wallet empty by the end of the day, after all. "Let's order before the line gets too long?" he suggested, rising to approach the line.
Thus, their outing ensued. The two went from place to place, store to store, granted that Haise seemed to be enjoying himself a little more than Mars. Even so, he hoped Mars at least somewhat was enjoying their time together. Haise was doing whatever he could to prevent this trip from being screwed up by some sort of thoughtless mistake. During the time they were out, not once did Echo cross Haise's mind. That girl didn't deserve to be in my head, anyway, he thought afterwards. Don't need her getting in the way.
Soon enough, they bid each other their goodbyes, and Haise was off, bound back for home. The whole outing had been... rather nice, he'd have to say. No major mistakes, nothing too awful, spare the awkward silences at times. Overall, he hoped that the whole thing wasn't weird to Mars or anything of the sort. He was able to sleep that night with the thought that they both enjoyed their time.
