The broad man representing SBET handed me the handle of a blanket covered cage. "This is unit 907." he told me. I peaked under the blanket to see the glint of sharp reddish glass and velvety fur. "He's a modified military surveillance bat. We use his lot to spy out espers and other freaks in our city." I saw he was a large flying fox, integrated with cyborg technology and an enhanced brain. I could work with this technology. it was far less complicated than some of the stuff that came out now from big companies like HAAGRF, XENDOT, and AVIC. 907 was likely an older model from AVIC. I recognized the lens work on the glass eye, and the subtle ribbing that indicated carbon based modifications in his bones. there was probably more modifications as well.
"He's clean right?" I asked, opening the cage and pulling out the large bat to examine more closely. I noted he was well trained, used to humans, and did not give me any trouble. I should definitely check his programs before I put him to use.
The representative from SBET nodded reassuringly. "of course. we made a point to check for trackers and viruses and anything else that might reach Big Brother." I smiled slightly at the reference to the controversial book. children of the new generation might never read it, but it was a fitting name for the Authorities in charge here. They had a hand in all the major corporations, including SEBT. Chances were 907 was heavily bugged. I'd have to clean him manually before calibrating his circuits to my uses and sending him on my work. None of this showed on my face as I was busy checking him over. He was physically healthy, larger than average for his species, and nothing was broken or glitchy.
"I'm impressed that you got him." I noted "these spy animals usually get killed and their parts melted down when their company doesn't want them anymore." I knew there was much competition between the big corporations to avoid the others finding out about their new technology too early. a lot of things were rigged to self destruct in various ways if tampered with. He and I both, were made to be like this, weapons or tools of the higher ups.
I put the bat back in the cage as the Representative explained to me his reasoning for getting the bat to me. "well you've done us plenty of services before. It wasn't easy, but we owe you for our last project's incredible profits AVIC would have got their offer in first if not for you." This was true. I had worked with SBET to stunt AVIC'S latest project, and get SBET critical informational leaks about what AVIC had been working on. Getting me a modified AVIC bat was in a way a joke and stroke at revenge against their rival, but also a fair enough trade to me.
I handed the SBET representative a file folder in which I had placed some more information that SBET might want to get a hold of, then stood. "There's your piece. I'd best not linger long." Time was precious to me and I had other appointments so I had to leave. "you know how to contact me. thanks or the bat." I could show myself out. the people here knew me as a regular and so didn't really get in my way as I signed out from my visit.
As I walked out I knew people on the street might question the cage. it wasn't easy to hide a large bat so I didn't intend to even try. if people didn't peak under the blanket it would be anyone's guess as to what I was carrying, an animal obviously, but that could have come from the pet store which was in the complex I had just been in. Now...to take this bat home and get a good look at it. Home was a bit of a walk unfortunately.
