It had been raining for days. It was the kind of slow drizzle that does not seem to have an end. When it wasn't raining hard, the heavy grey cloud cover made the city gloomy and unpleasant. People were quick to go on their way, moving at a brisk pace to and from public or personal transit to various indoor locations. No one wanted to be out in the gloomy weather if they could avoid it. No one paid much heed to the child standing soaked in the rain. She had her back to a building, letting people pass on the side walk in front. she stared out at the street almost unseeing. Her clothing was grubby, too large for her skinny shoulders, and not suited to the weather at all. She held a large rabbit doll, equally sopping wet. Having a poor agenda, if she had any, the girl did not bother trying to go anywhere. No place was particularly better than being here. some places were worse.

Kenessa What even brought Kenessa to this place?
Ah, right, a pawn that promised way more than it delivered on. She had found something during one of her many, ah hem, expeditions, and found it less than lustrous for her tastes. She thought it pretty ugly, and thus had it pawned off to some buyer.
Needless to say, it didn't do well. Now, here she was, walking in the rain. At least she had an umbrella with her - one of the many things on her belt that she never left without.
Her mood was a little sour from the pocket change she got from it, and she was set to walk by all of the people trudging their way in the rain.
That is, until she saw some little girl standing alone in the rain. Probably homeless. Not her problem.
She tried to keep walking. It wasn't any of her business.
Closing her eyes, she sighed. Her day was shot, but it didn't mean that she was the only person under duress. That girl didn't even look like she had good clothes.
No, it was none of her business!
And, even with that thought in her mind, her body turned to walk toward the little girl. She stood next to Shiren for a second, holding the umbrella over her.
"Why don't you have on your galoshes, tyke?" Kenessa asked the kid. "Can't you see the absolute rip out here? The sky's gonna eat you whole." Planeswalking human True Neutral | 31 | Female

The child started, almost as if something physical between herself and the umbrella, and that that was too close for comfort. Her focus, out in the middle of the street before, narrowed in on that point in between the umbrella's handle and her nose. Shiren's expression, being one of surprise, would probably seem nearly comical in this situation. This was soon replaced by a slightly blank expression. Shiren didn't understand the way which Kenessa was talking very well. Tyke, galoshes, and rip were especially confusing words. She also had no idea how a sky could eat anyone so the whole thing made very little sense to her.
However she did understand that she ought to say something. "Uhh... Galoshees." she repeated, looking at the umbrella's dark interior as though the umbrella was galoshes. Actually that seemed about right. Umbrellas were Galoshes. "right... Got none." she tried to explain. She couldn't use what she didn't have. That much at least was pretty simple.

Kenessa Well, it was readily apparent to Kenessa that Shiren didn't understand what she was saying. The kid was, apparently, either young or uneducated. Or both.
Gods, this was painful. What did she get herself into?
"Ah... me, Kenessa. You, wet and cold," she said slowly to Shiren. "Give you umbrella. Um-brel-la," in retrospect, that was extremely patronizing and probably insulting, but she wasn't really in the mood to be a nice lady.
She was already loaning an umbrella to some vagrant - why complicate things more by acting like some saintly priestess?
Still, there was one question that needed to be asked. "Where, family? Family?" Planeswalking human True Neutral | 31 | Female

Shiren frowned. she could sense the difference of being spoken to in this new way. It was understandable enough, but even shiren could tell there was some sort of grammatical truncation going on opposed to how normal speech went. She didn't take the umbrella. Instead she stated. "Galoshees" as though she knew better about what to call the umbrella than Kanessa did, and slipped away from its shadow back to where she was getting all wet. She decided since she was already wet, being under that dark concave thing wouldn't help things at all. Plus she wasn't fond of the shadow the umbrella cast.
Shiren looked up at the rainy sky. "no family any place." shiren noted since that was the question that was being asked. Shiren didn't really know why she never got to have any family anywhere, but that was what things had been like for a long while so she was 'used' to it.

Kenessa This girl was annoying. To be fair, Kenessa thought that way about all children, but this one was one of those impossible to deal with kids who didn't like to listen.
Well, of course she wouldn't - you're some stranger who came up to her and offered an umbrella. Or galoshee. Whatever the hell this kid called it. Her mother must've taught her not t-
Oh crap, she didn't have a mother. "No mum or dad, huh?" Kenessa said. Her story wasn't novel - there were an extreme number of homeless kids in the world, after all. It was a wide, wide planet.
"Aye, that's the pits, it is," Kenessa said. "Well, I uh..." Need to go? Don't feel like dealing with you? Think that you're a little mouse that needs to find a house to hide in before you die of pneumonia?
"Ya hungry, Galoshee?" She asked.

It was more along the lines of how shiren's mind worked than in not liking to listen. Sometimes she simply came up with abnormal responses to things, but they seemed completely natural to her. Kenessa could probably expect more weird responses if she continued to interact with Shiren.
the child spun in circles in the rain as Kenessa spoke to her. They were slow circles. shiren was sort of listening, she just probably didn't look like she was listening. "Galosheeses don' be." shiren explained, referring to umbrellas which couldn't eat things rather than thinking that Kenessa might be referring to shiren.
Shiren did actually want food. She could get some food on her own but it was often rather weird to the average human's pallet. being asked if she was hungry however would not easily create a response about herself.

Kenessa That almost tore it there. Kenessa was ready to just head out and not deal with this possibly unstable little girl. She was airheaded, at least from what the woman could see. Airheads were the worst to deal with; minds in the clouds with no common sense to be found for kilometers.
But, just like the big freaking softie she thought she was turning into, she shook her head. "Just... wait here, kid," she said to Shiren.
Walking toward a stand, she muttered to herself. "Wot am I even fucken doin', right now? I should be kicking back in my jams listenin' to Remory. Not talking to some dumb kid standing in the rain..." she looked to the server at the stand. "Two please."
"Ah, is that your daughter? Why's she standing in the rain?" The server asked with a worried expression.
"She ain't mine," Kenessa was very quick to say.
"Ah. That's a shame," he said, prepping the food. "Kids forced out into the cold like that never sits right with me. You're doing a good thing."
Kenessa rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I'm just the Saint Yarna of the Ascendants, aren't I?"
The man offered a chuckle before giving her the food. "There's extra meat on the one for her," he said. "And it's on the house."
Giving some money to the server for her own, she took the food over to Shiren. The food was a kebob, full of well-cooked meats and veggies. The one for Shiren had much more meat on it than her own, possibly out of worry that the girl was probably starving.
"Here you go, kid," Kenessa said, holding out the kebob. "Be thankful, ya got the Goddess of Plenty looking out for you."

Shiren actually did wait. For one she didn't actually have anywhere to go, and for another she actually liked having some attention. Though her reactions were sometimes 'not right' for keeping the attention she got.
There was no reason to move farm, though Shiren slipped back against the wall rather than keep standing in the middle of the way. Walls and being near walls was a little more comfortable than being out in the open in a crowd.
Shiren didn't say much as kenessa came back and she was offered the meat stick. Shiren's hands both reached to grab the food, She sniffed it first, and tilted the stick around to look at all sides. It seemed like it was safe and it smelled like food, so shiren bit into the meat at the top of the stick.
What shiren didn't say was thanks. That wasn't something shiren had properly learned, but more she didn't say it because she hated the sound of the word. Plus she had food now and that took priority.

Kenessa The fact that Shiren was eating food was a bit of a relief. If the child had refused it, Kenessa didn't know how she would react. Perhaps she would've just completely left her in the rain.
That sounded about right, yeah.
"Yeah, eat up kid," she said, taking a bite of her own food. It was delicious. Too bad she couldn't savor it right now.
She kept the umbrella over Shiren, mostly out of consequence of it being kinda large and her standing next to her.
Then, something crossed her mind when looking out at the rain. "Where do you even sleep?" She asked. Planeswalking human True Neutral | 31 | Female

Shiren focused more on eating than on talking or listening. She was eating very quickly, to the point where it was probably unhealthy, but she didn't know when someone might come and decide to take the food. There was no time to savor it even though it tasted good.
Eating so quickly was of course a mistake. Swallowing wrong, shiren entered a violent coughing fit. This dominated everything else. she could not pay attention to the annoying umbrella, nor the remaining food, nor listen to Kenessa's questions. The food was dropped. Shiren's hands went to her throat.
At least since she was coughing she wasn't completely choking.

Kenessa "Good gods, kid, chew the food, don't wolf it down like some animal," Kenessa said with a barely veiled tone of annoyance. "You're not some wild dog."
At least, that's what she assumed.
Still, the girl was probably hungry. Kenessa knew the feeling of being backed into a corner and finally getting something she needed. It makes you ravage it.

Luckily shiren recovered from the coughing pretty much on her own. She took large heavy breaths of air in order to try and cough no more. Now her throat hurt which made eating harder right now. She picked up the spilled food anyway. Even though it had been on the ground she would want to finish it. The ground was far from poison after all. The child retried the food hesitantly. Not minding if there was any grit on it, and chewing more slowly now that she'd almost choked. In a day or so she'd probably make the same mistake but for now slow was better than all the rush.
Shiren looked up at Kenessa for a moment. She had not understood much of the spoken words but a few she found had made sense. "Arf!" Shiren suggested, kinda seeming like she was agreeing at being a dog. At least she knew accuratly what kind of sound a dog might make, and it was far easier to say than trying to piece together normal words.

Kenessa "Uh. Okay then?" Kenessa simply responded. "Well, doggie, you need to be more careful. Gods."
Shiren was a nerve-wrecking little thing, it seemed.
Even still, Kenessa sighed. "You're still hungry, aren't you?" Planeswalking human True Neutral | 31 | Female

If Kenessa had any food left on her stick, then Shiren suddenly grabbed for it, trying to snatch it so that she could eat the rest of that as well, and confirming that more food was desired. If she succeed in grabbing the stick she'd not even ask before eating the remaining meat and veggies on the kabob.
If Kenessa had already finished the food on her stick, then shiren gnawed on her own empty stick. She tried to get off any tiny scraps which might be stuck to the wood... until she ended up breaking the stick. Shiren looked at the two parts forlornly. Why'd it have to be all gone so soon?
