Sonlas Dragons
Sonlas dragons are a taxonomic group of reptilian beings native to the island of Sonlas. The Sonlas dragons are distinguished by merit of their nature -- they're a natural, non-supernatural set of species that has coexisted with other creatures for as long as anyone can remember. Though they are the only kinds of dragons thought to be native to the island, other varieties coexist with them and are occasionally mistaken for a native species.
Physiology
There are three species of Sonlas dragons: central wyverns, Daihebi serpents, and plains drakes, though there are numerous different physiological variations within species. All three species are completely sapient and capable of speaking human languages. Their talons are opposable, allowing them to manipulate small objects. They are all obligate carnivores and endotherms, despite often seeming lizard-like. They reach sexual maturity at around 14 years of age and have a life expectancy for them is usually between 60 and 70 years. Though some Sonlas dragons are known to live independently, they are social creatures, and the vast majority either live within close-knight social groups or integrate themselves into civilized society, usually on the outskirts of it rather than near major cities. All varieties often have horns and/or feathers.Species
- Central Wyverns: Central wyverns are native to the Asartis that divide the island of Sonlas. They're the largest of the species, roughly the size of elephants, and have four limbs, the front pair of which are wings, and are resistant to low temperature extremes and function well at high altitudes. The designation of the Asartis as a no fly zone has lead to many of the attempting to live among modern people.
- Daihebi Serpents: Daihebi serpents are an aquatic species of dragon that live primarily in the Daihebi river that runs the length of Richu, and though they sometimes also live in lakes and the coastlines around Sonlas. They have long, serpentine bodies sensitive whiskers, and can hold their breath for an exceptionally long amount of time, but lack wings for flying and are poorly suited to life away from water, making them rare to find in settlements.
- Plains Drakes: Plains drakes can be found both east and west of the Asartis. Plains drakes are distinguished by having six limbs instead of four, with two sets of legs and a central pair of wings, though they're much better at running than flying. Though nomadic tribes of them were once common, their small size -- between a pony and a workhorse for most individuals -- has allowed many of them to acclimate to civilization.
