Shiren watched the small grocer from behind a trashcan across the street. It was an open doors day, where the weather was nice enough that the wares from the shop were set out on the sidewalk, easy to see. It wasn’t the most valuable produce, heads of cabbage and leafy greens, potatoes and carrots. Fortunately there was also fruit, apples, and the like, not in season, but definitely a favorite for the little girl if she had to choose something.
And it was all there out in the open for the taking. Shiren saw people picking up the food, going inside for just a moment and then walking away with the food in bags. It seemed like a claim it keep it system. For Shiren it was all very appealing. It was free right, so what a life-saving chance it was. Though others were taking stuff slowly, if it was taker’s keepers she’d have to be quick to get the best stuff.
With a plan in mind, the girl rushed across the street, eliciting angry honks from the large bulky metal creatures which transported people about. She didn’t get hit, but she had not exactly timed her crossing to be safe. The cars must not like to share the road. She had not ended up hit and that was really all that mattered.
Not asking, nor begging, the child ran to the grocer’s open air portion, and grabbed whatever she could carry, apples of course, and carrots, and some kind of small gourd. It was in her hands now so it was her’s right. The girl ran off, but then came the yells. “Thief” Shiren didn’t understand, but she ran because she wanted to find a safe place to try and break into the food.
A hand grabbed her from behind. Shiren was small and light so whoever it was hoisted her easily into the air. Dropping the food, shiren screamed, a high pitched ear piercing sound. Her hands reached instead for the hands of whoever had grabbed her, and she scratched at those with her fingernails as she kicked and struggled. Even human fingernails could leave welts and cause bleeding, and shiren was pretty well practiced in doing so so whoever grabbed her must have gotten hurt, but the person didn’t let go. Instead, whoever it was began taking her somewhere, back towards the shop from which she had stolen the food. He spoke in a lecturing tone but shiren really didn’t understand the point he was trying to make, and his word’s went over her head, especially since she was trying hard to claw her way free.

The day had been going well so far. The rain that had plagued the skies of Sanctuary had faded finally and, although the temperature was still nippy early in the morning, by the early afternoon it had warmed up enough to where the shopkeepers could put their produce outside for display. She had little money to spend on herself, let alone food or other necessities, so it seemed as though she would be left to browse unless she could haggle with the shop keeper. Her amber eyes looked around lazily at the selection available, her mouth watering slightly at the sight of food; by no means was she a glutton, but she was hungry. Since she had spent most of her life as a feline, eating naught but red meat and fish for the most part, her knowledge of fruits and vegetables was sincerely lacking; however, her human brain seemed to be attracted to oranges and bananas the most out of the selection available. She reached in her pocket and frowned as she felt nothing but coinage; pulling out what she had, it totaled to about two dollars with some left over. There were no prices listed anywhere among the stands and containers, so she was at a loss as to what she'd have to pay if she wanted to get something. With a distraught hum, the girl put the change away decided to grab two oranges and a small bundle of bananas and walked over to the grocer.
"I, uh...I noticed you didn't have any prices listed...," Patty said, letting him see the product.
The grocer was a lean, dark skinned man with a beard and glasses. His attire suggested that he either didn't make much money from his job, or he simply didn't care for appearances. He looked with an inquisitive eye at the produce, then at the girl. "Two oranges and some bananas, hm?" he said, "Three dollars."
The girl pursed her lips at the price. Setting the produce on the counter, she reached in her pocket and pulled out the change she had counted earlier. "I've only got two and some change..." she said, "Would you take that?"
After she handed the change over, he started counting it and frowned. The girl pursed her lips as he looked at the change for a moment longer. "Tell you what," he said, his frown suddenly giving way to a hearty laugh, "Ya seem like a sweet girl. I'll call it a deal."
Feigning surprise, the girl said, "Really? Thank you!" She put her backpack on the ground before packing the food away for later. "Have a good day, miss" the grocer said as she walked off. A small, knowing smile was on her face as she left; emotional manipulation was too easy. While part of her felt bad for using it to get what she wanted, it was a survival tactic, and one she intended to use as long as she needed to get by.
Sometime later, the girl had worked her way down a few shops; now genuinely broke, she was simply window shopping and taking in all of the different things that humans valued and bought with money. It was still odd for her to think that, with so much food and space, that they needed to have some form of transaction; wouldn't be easier just to give it away and live without the hassle? Regardless of her personal thoughts on the matter, it was still fascinating; however, that fascination was shoved to the side when she heard someone shouting "Thief!"
She looked over her shoulder to see the shopkeeper she had talked with earlier chasing after someone--she didn't get a good look at who--and heard what sounded like a child screaming after he had disappeared into a nearby alleyway. She had no idea why--perhaps it was some inner maternal instinct--but she quietly made her way through the crowded sidewalk to go and see what was going on. What she saw was the shop keeper trying to lecture a rather uncooperative child or teenager--it was hard to tell since most of her was covered in a dingey yellow shirt that was several sizes too big--and failing miserably. Part of her wondered what the fuss was about, but the food on the ground told her most of what she needed to know...
"Um..." was all she could think of to say at the moment.

Shiren struggled all the way back to the store. She was set down and pressed against a wall.
"call the police, This kid's a thief, Probably a run away too by the look of it." the store keeper said, while roughly examining the girl. Using his hands to prod her, the man determined that she was hiding nothing under her clothing. There was not even a dime on Shiren's person.
The man had to be rough. Shiren continued to struggle and squirm. She even tried to bite the man once when his arm got too close, so the child had to be held down at multiple points. The shop keeper was a big man, but it was still difficult to hold down Shiren alone. Shiren snapped and growled and seemed far more like a wild animal than any human being her age ought to.
He tried to talk her into calming down, though it was difficult to do while focusing on holding the child down. "Look kid, Some people are gonna come and help you out I'm not even mad at you for stealing, though you really mustn't do it again."
"Police. what seems to be the problem?" The shop keeper could not look at the police, but thanks to the words he knew the had come. Someone had called them.
The man was thankful for that. "this damn kid tried to steal from me. She's either homeless or runaway too. Ow!"
Shiren finally succeeded in biting the man who owned the store. He loosened his grip enough. She slipped out and ran towards a gap in the gathered crowd, towards where Patchy was watching. Someone grabbed Shiren's arm and jerked her back.
Shiren clawed at the hand that had grabbed her but whoever it was held firm and had a strong grip which made it very difficult for shiren to Break free and make a break for it.
