It was hard to believe that he was truly back in sanctuary, walking among the skyscrapers and looking down at the cars below.
Wait...
Down?
Woah! A sudden dizziness struck Malik as he realized that there was literally nothing below him. He ought to be falling. Why couldn't he feel gravity pulling him down.
Disoriented, he looked around, taking inventory of himself.
This was a dream? Alright. It had to be since his body was practically missing.
He began to explore the city, stopping by places he knew.
The library. It was closed at this hour.
His old job. People were still working at the restaurant but it was clear that he had been easily replaced, practically forgotten.
His old apartment. They had rebuilt after the fire. The tenants were all new.
The park. What had happened here. It was all roped off and construction crews were everywhere.
There was a mechanical buzz, followed by pain as an electrical shock. He pulled back automatically. The pain was accompanied accompanied by a duality of awareness. He was in a study in Maximillion's estate, surrounded by books that he'd been perusing. He was also here in sanctuary, recoiling from a technology which could affect the astral.
He willed himself elsewhere, the first place he could think of.
Hitting the ground hard, despite being a nonphysical entity, Malik found himself in front of the homeless shelter he'd spent so much time at during the recent year. He wasn't technically breathing but out of habit he still was performing the motions of breathing hard. What had happened back there. Was this real?
(If you have characters who can sense ghosts and spiritual forces. You'll be able to perceive Malik.)

Hands rested in the pockets of the bunny-hoodie while the young middle-school student walked down the sidewalks of the street. Taking the walk back to her house was much more relaxing than sitting in a noisy bus, and it was nice to get some fresh air once in a while instead of being cooped up in her room. Despite her preference of sitting alone indoors, she was not one to be considered a shut-in, and found the term a little insulting when used to label her.
She had a little hobby that she was not going to belittle; but that was part of the reason she was even taking a walk. The glass panes of buildings, the metal of cars, the windows of trucks, even puddles on the ground... all aided her in seeing what she wanted to see; scenes from faraway places that were as vivid as day. As she was walking in front of the homeless shelter, on her way back to her dwelling, the lavender-haired girl noticed something strange; a man that appeared suddenly, out of the blue.
Amethyst eyes narrowed at the light-haired man as Nifa began to stroll towards him, easily recognizing him as someone who was not from around here. Was he from that closed off land she could only get a few glimpses of once in a while, or was he with that rebel organization, Eden? Nifa knew of the small group after having met the leader when it was a large force to be reckoned with. Ever since Feya's death, however, Eden was scattered and not quite like what it used to be.
"Oi, you there!" the girl began in a normal, casual voice, not quite caring who was around. She had walked over to the man and stood only a few feet away from him. It hopefully would be obvious to him that she wanted his attention. "You're not from here, are you?"

Unnaturally bright eyes turned towards the human who'd approached, first laced with surprise. He hadn't realized that he's been this visible.
Malik looked around, scanning the area for anyone else who might be near, looking for indication that they could or couldn't see him.
He felt self conscious, and tried to take mastery over the astral form he had, and look as human now as he did normally. He failed miserably. He couldn't make himself look more human, or even like the ghost of a human right now.
Reluctantly he gave up on the appearances vein. He'd just have to settle for being obvious. Besides the girl didn't seem to be the bad sort, and he didn't sense anyone else. Besides, A friend of his had been right in saying that younger humans had better sight than adults, but this one wasn't that young was she.
"You shouldn't let yourself be seen talking to me kid." He finally pointed out, concerned about the authorities even now. "And no, I'm from here." He insisted, though he probably didn't look the part right now. He'd been born and raised in sanctuary.

"My parents are Enforcers. And I'm not worried about any authorities. You should be the one worried about them," the little girl said with an innocent smile. Was he not one of the ones the humans of Sanctuary were fighting against? Anyone who looked like... that... was an enemy. Even if few could see astral beings, were one wearing the right goggles or glasses, or had the right sensors out, it likely would not be too hard to pinpoint where he was.
As for her, she felt there was no reason to fear for her own safety. All they could do was try to remove the scene from her mind before she did it to theirs, or simply get them to believe something other than what was apparent; that she could see the spirit. Perhaps she was too forthcoming about her family, but what was the worse that could happen with that? She could scare him off or he could attack her. The idea could be frightening, though Nifa had yet to develop a true sense of fear. In this case, she was far too awestruck with the somewhat angelic being. She wanted to know more about the type she had once only seen from afar.
"You must have done a pretty good job at hiding if you are from here, though I can't say you're doing that well right now," Nifa observed, remarking on the fact that he was smack out in public during daylight hours. "I guess you have your reasons though. So, sir, what exactly are you?"

Oh he was worried, but he was trying to not make a scene of it. It was always more obvious if you acted like you knew something was out of place. "Don't think that you're immune." Malik pointed put. "They get enough evidence and there's no way out." He explained. At least that was how he'd experienced it, like the tightening jaws of a trap ready to close on him as soon as they got enough evidence. She was young enough now that they might not believe it was anything but pretend, but who knew about the future.
Malik continued to glance around hoping that no one else would appear. It didn't feel safe out here whether he was invisible to unmodified mortal eyes or not. He didn't want to take chances in hopes that no one else would see him for long. "You can see me." He stated the obvious. "No guarantee anyone else can." The right tech could, of that he was sure. He didn't know at all about if any other people might. It probably depended on what he was.
"Either way, we'd be safer inside." He didn't move yet, but last time he'd been here, the shelter had not been up to date on their tech. He'd been able to live here for months. He wasn't sure if he'd answer her question about what he was yet. He wasn't even sure he could explain what this state of being was.

When a young man invited a young middle school age girl to head inside of a more questionable building with him, specifically, the homeless shelter, one may be wise to kindly refuse the offer and try to leave the area. Of course, Nifa could at least discern that this was no ordinary man. And at that, she was no ordinary child or teen; she had yet to develop a proper sense of anxiety. It was true she could at least recognize the situation as suspicious. However, she could not emotionally feel suspicion or fear or worry, or anything that should properly go along with the sense of the scene.
The man hastened to give her a warning, likely for her own protection. He had a point; she did have some belief that she was above being captured, and the warning at least reminded the girl of some basic wisdom any "aware" person in the city should have.
Normally, she would have refused the suggestion to venture into the old homeless shelter, but her curiosity remained undeniable. If she had to get into an area he deemed comfortable to learn more, so be it. He was first astral being she had ever met up close, and the first supernatural she had seen in a long while. "With enough evidence, there is no way out, but I don't think I'll let them get that much information," Nifa finally replied, maintaining a sincerely innocent smile, even if the words showed a trace of overconfidence in herself. "Sure, let's go in if you're more comfortable with that. You're the first of them I've met in a while."

Malik strode towards the door, but ended up appearing right at it with a thought. Fortunately it was not too far away.
He placed a hand on the doorknob. No, through the doorknob, before withdrawing his hand in surprise. Had he really expected it to just open like normal?
Actually he had expected just that.
He intentionally tried stepping through the door, slightly surprised that it worked. There was the hallway, the cafeteria just ahead, to the left the kitchen, as if nothing had changed. Of course it wasn't empty, but it wasn't as busy at this hour as it would have been later in the day. Malik knew where there ought to be even less people at least it would be barren of the shelter hadn't yet finished repairs.

Nifa quietly followed the astral projection, raising an eyebrow in an impressed manner as he basically teleported over to the door, and finally walked through it. Now... that was slightly embarrassing. A thirteen year old girl stopping by a homeless shelter? Well, if she needed an excuse, she could blame looking to volunteer. A lie, but they would not remember her for long after.
"Where to, now?" she would murmur, coming alongside the spirit from behind. A dark corner would be shady, but probably needed for hiding.

Down a hall, a blocked off door. It was supposed to be locked, but rarely ever was, Beyond that, some storage, space and beyond that...
It hadn't changed. There was still rubble on the floor, and a hole in one of the walls, and the ceiling was a mess. It was still dusty, and uninhabitable, and a stain on any building inspection.
All from the last time demons had attacked the area several months ago.
"seriously, they fixed nothing?" Malik spoke to himself, bothered by the fact that the shelter had just added on a new building rather than mending any of the old.
At least that meant not many people would come here, the occasional shelter overflow, but this place wouldn't be very comfortable to live or sleep in. It was the best place to be alone in the shelter that he knew of.

The astral man seemed far more fixated on the old homeless shelter than the young girl he had led along. Were all spirits like this? Nifa frowned slightly as he muttered to himself about the worn building instead of answering her question. She continued to follow him before stopping, the area quiet enough for her preference. Really, what looked stranger, one talking to themselves in a public area, or in private? Likely, like all things, it probably was dependent on what was really going on.
"So, sir," the lavender haired teen began, casually crossing her arms. "Just who... and what... are you? If it makes you feel any better, I'll introduce myself first. Call me Nifa." It was not her full name, but enough for her to give to people without them tracking her down so easily. Besides, by the time they parted ways, she would have at least tried to alter the memory of her name and appearance in his mind... if it was possible on Spirits like him. If not, oh well. She was just another silly spiritually aware human girl, nothing that one could really deem a threat or someone of importance to be remembered.

Malik sat on a pile of rubble, or at least tried to. He had to support all his own weight, not that he necessarily had weight in this state of being.
How much should he answer any of those questions? Her parents were enforcers. Would it compromise him if he wanted to come back, actually made his way back to sanctuary? He was willing to answer some or else he would have never suggested coming in here he supposed.
"I'm a human." How could he still say that when he looked so astral? But he'd insisted that for months after he'd known that he was different. "Was human," he corrected. "till I ended up like this. After that, your guess is as good as mine." He hoped she would forget about not having his name. He didn't know if the daughter of enforcers would recognize it from something she'd seen or tell it to her parents, especially since he knew the enforcers knew. He might have used a pseudonym but he hadn't been able to think of anything that actually fit well enough to use.

'Like this' was a fancy way to put it; he had an odd look, but had he no guess as to what he might be? Nifa remained standing with her arms crossed as she listened to the astral man, who perched himself on a small pile of rubble. "No guess at all? You seem like some sort of angel, seraph, or spirit-like fairy," the girl commented, gazing at his odd form. "When did you first become like... that. If you were once human, what made you first not human?"
The question was simple and straightforward. The girl disregarded his name. A name was a name, and could be asked for later. That, and she was not unwise enough to know that most mythical beings were not too keen on sharing much personal information. Perhaps her questions could be taken as rather abrasive or too bold, though she could care less. All she wanted was knowledge. And besides, in a way they were at each other's mercy; he could use some type of supernatural power against her, or she could call in guards or enforcers. It was not like they were hidden away too well. In the end, it was just curiosity. She was curious about him, and if he had any curiosity about her, he would only find an average middle school girl; nothing spectacular.

"Lets go with that." She'd listed like three things but any one of them would do. Angel, saraph, spirit-like fairy, whatever applied. He still thought of himself as at least somewhat human, but he didn't want to claim that if he couldn't look the part.
"Being not human," he was specifically referring to this state of being, rather than his process of being not human while existing in a physical body. That was a story he didn't want to tell the whole of. "I'm not that sure. Maybe it was dreams or something, but never something this real."

Nifa frowned once more. This person was hard to get any information out of. Was he totally disoriented, or simply unwilling to tell her anything? Dreams rarely made anyone into something, so his response was confusing. If the latter was the case, and he was not wanting to give her much to think about, she would simply aim for another route of questions.
"Well... let me ask you this," she began, loosening her frown back to a casual and relaxed expression once more. "Do you enjoy being what you are, not human? Is it fun at all? Scary? Or just boring?"
Another sincere question, but not many were keen on lying about their emotions when blatantly asked, unless they truly had something to hide. Hopefully this type of prying for knowledge would work. Naturally, she could simply try to read his story herself, but the process was very taxing for the young girl, and typically something she avoided. Passing out in a homeless shelter was not the most welcoming idea.

"Being not human here, that sucks big time." Malik Answered honestly. This was a direction he could better tell if he was careful. "There's surprise about being something you don't even believe exists. then you find out how much the city's out to get you. If you don't get the noose then and there, it's constant paranoia wondering when the enforcers will get you."
Saying it like that, why did he even want to be back here in flesh and blood? Being not human in sanctuary wasn't fun at all.
