She didn't want to do this... Olivia really didn't want to do this, but she wasn't given any other option. She did have to eat, after all. It wasn't like this was the first time she'd made her way over here, to this dumb supermarket or whatever, but she couldn't have picked a worse day to be there. People were all over the place, scrambling for whatever they could get to complete their list in the shortest amount of time as possible. Olivia was simply brushed passed by everyone as she carefully tried to find the supplies she needed for the next month at least. Or however long she could last without having to come back here.
It wasn't common knowledge, since no one really knew Olivia anyway, but she was a but of an outcast. Even among her people she wasn't exactly viewed as someone who could be trusted. Who could blame them really? Her two halves were of creatures who despised even the thought of one another. How she was even conceived in the first place baffled Olivia beyond belief, and yet here she was! Alive, and well, although hungry and in need of supplies.
The Mermaid-Siren hybrid's golden eyes flashed slightly as she finally caught sight of the first item on her list! In reality, she'd only been searching for five minutes, but it felt like an eternity if you felt like you could be ostracized at any moment. But that wasn't what was on her mind at that very moment, no. For now she needed to gather up her prizes, apples, before anyone else would push her aside.
Quickly scanning over each individual fruit, she quickly placed them in her basket and moved on. Olivia could have sworn she accidentally put a badly wounded fruit in her basket, but she could rightly care. All that mattered was getting what she needed as quickly as possible and getting out of there. The consequences she'd face would have to wait later.
What's next on the list? she thought as she glanced over the list only to find that she'd been on a low of crackers! How could she let that happen?! Her fish friends would hardly like that at all! (Though, now that she really thought about it, her fish friends hadn't moved in quite a while... or eaten really.) Olivia brushed the thought out of her mind as she gathered as many boxes of crackers as she could possibly get her hands on! (When did she even find them?)
Brushing a hand through her long, cyan colored hair, Olivia could already feel her adrenaline rushing. This was already taking too long! What on earth was wrong with her today? She was usually so much faster than this! At this rate, the entire day would be spent trying to navigate through all of these people...
...Then she saw a uniform! As in, someone who worked at the market! Yes! she thought. Never have I been so pleased to see another living creature!
Her joy could not be contained as Olivia walked right up to the man and said, "Excuse me, good sir," and she didn't even stutter! "I was wondering..." But of course, as the man's green eyes pierced her golden eyes, it seemed as though time began to slow. Olivia felt all of the noise around her drown out, and she barely heard the disgruntled question that came out of the man's mouth. Olivia froze a bit before quickly backing away and changing directions. "That's okay!" she squeaked. "Um, I'll just let you, um... get back to work."
"Is there something I can help you with?" Oh dear... the man insisted! Olivia really did something to make him upset it seemed... but since he offered...
"Well," she cautiously began. "I'm having a bit of trouble finding some of the things on my list."

"Well, what things?" The store employee patiently asked. The patience was a bit of a facade at this point. There had been a few...highly irritable clients earlier, who'd ended up coming in and making a scene. That one dramatic situation easily set the mood of the staff involved as sour, but even if they felt that way, policy insisted that they be friendly and actively willing to help shoppers find what they might need, among the other tasks such as shelving products, and making sure price tag labels stayed where they ought.
Most shoppers didn't say they need help finding 'things' Often they listed a product which they wanted to get with less preamble. He could not point the way to any of the Items unless they were actually named. Luckily the delays in the girl's words so far were not too unusual. Not all customers were as loudly articulate as the trouble makers from a few hours before.

Caramel-colored makeup subtly covered its skin, a mask for the grayness underneath. It was what it put on everyday, when interacting with humans. It never forgot to put on its tinted makeup, coloring its skin similarly to everyone else's around it. Such a perfect disguise for a sentient creature like it; smooth features and none of the oiliness seen on humans allowed the makeup to stick onto the skin as long as it needed to.
Happy, as it was called, entered the store, ambling along. It seemed mechanic in its actions, slow-moving— as if it was overanalyzing every step. Yet, the smile never faded. It was such an unusual smile; as if the being couldn't contain being giddy and excited for everything— and everyone— around it. What an odd creature.
Humming a tune, Happy continued along, cautiously maneuvering around the bunches of people to reach an aisle that read "snacks." While looking up at the hanging sign, it accidentally bumped into someone. Surprised at its own clumsiness, Happy looked down at the one it bumped into, what seemed like a female with bluish-green hair. Unnatural, like its own hair. "Pardon my bumbling ineptitude, ma'am," Happy expressed regret, its smile seeming to take on a life of its own, looking for forgiveness.
Before the female could reply, however, Happy nodded and continued its stride into the aisle, moving a box of what looked like crackers aside to reach for a box of biscuits— or as many citizens of the Sanctuary called them, cookies. Satisfied with its gains, the disguised creature continued along the aisle, heading for the register.

This was making her quite a bit nervous. Olivia looked over her notes, trying to think back on how much of what that she needed, but her mind was a literal blank. She tried to look around the store to see if that would jog her memory... Big mistake. Looking around seemed to bring the massive amounts of people into focus more than the actual items that she was getting. What a mess! Olivia finally became desperate enough to finally tucker down and look at her list, but then she made the rather unfortunate mistake of taking a step forward without looking and-
BAM!
Suddenly Olivia found herself slamming right into... Someone? Honestly, she had no idea what she was even looking at. A person of some sort, maybe? It bewildered her so much she almost forgot to apologize! However, he seemed to say his apologies and left with a bag of cookies in tow before Olivia could even sneeze. Seeing the strange being grab the package of cookies before heading straight for the register seemed to give her an idea.
"Actually, sir," Olivia said with a nervous smile. "It seems as though I already found it... Um, many apologies. Thank you!" Olivia snatched the same brand of cookies, the sugar cookies to be exact, and was soon on her way to the registers. In reality, Olivia really had a whole bunch of things she still needed, but all that mattered to her at the moment was getting her high tail out of there.
Before placing her items on the belt, however, a catchy sort of song began to play over head. Olivia began bobbing her head as she waited in line, humming a bit of the tune as she rocked her head back and forth. As she did so, water seemed to bob in the glass of a customer, and the louder she sang, the higher the water seemed to snake up. It certainly wasn't something that could be missed!
Olivia seemed to squeak when she noticed it again, but it was too late. The young woman seemed to have made quite the huge mistake, whether or not she truly meant to.

As Happy waited in the line at the register, it could hear shuffling of footsteps behind it, and a soft sort of a melodic voice behind it. Curious, but not wanting to turn, Happy continued to face forward, its expression the same one it kept its whole life— a painful smile, an easy grin, a playful smirk. It was all the same, only changing when its own emotions changed.
However, the singing became too loud to not be noticed by anyone else in the store. People were starting to turn to the voice behind Happy, and in turn it caused more attention towards the being itself. It was already difficult enough staying in the Sanctuary without having attention brought to it, and with this the Authorities would surely kill Happy if they found out who it truly was.
Despite not being able to feel heat or cold, Happy was sure that if it could, it would surely be sweating with nervousness at the girl's singing. Slowly it turned and chuckled, seeing the younger girl from before.
"I reckon our fates intersect once more?" it spoke, the voice gravelly and cracking in places, quite the opposite of its diluted caramel-tinted appearance. The voice carried a weight, one several centuries older than any physical trait Happy showed; it seemed to make an attempt at speaking fluidly and with a larger vocabulary than would be spoken casually. "Your singing— how may I deliver these words to you in an innoxious way— is quite vigorous," Happy uttered, its gaze focused on a cup with water moving inside it. It blinked several times, its attention captivated by the water.
The squeak let out from the woman did little to divert its attention, instead making Happy giggle at the sound.

People were staring. People were watching. Very few in the near vicinity had not reacted. What an unusual thing. The standard reaction, as encouraged by the media, the news and the government was well known. See something unusual, make a text. Include a picture if you had one. Plenty of people had their phones out already. No doubt the report was already made.
"Next!" Bellowed the voice of an annoyed cashier, impatient with the hold up in the line. Costumers were known for even less patience, and the line had to be kept moving. Luckily, Happy was next in line, so there wasn't much waiting left to do.

It seemed being off duty never lasted for long.
A man who was only slightly taller than the average human, clad in the casual attire of a button-down shirt and loose trousers, cast a baleful eye behind him at the loud singing. Holding a basket full of bagged groceries, he was on his way to leave the store when he felt the need to glare in the direction of whomsoever was making such a racket in the public space. He would have continued on, exiting through the glass sliding doors, had it not been for the reactions he saw in the other customers.
His eyes drew immediately to the noticeable spectacle of water bouncing up and down in a customer's glass, where people were taking out their phones. The customer who was holding the glass appeared shell-shocked, staring in blank surprise. There was a squeak, the singer's head-bobbing and singing abruptly stopping when her own gaze crossed with that of the glass, and at that same moment the water splashed back down into the cup, settling with much aplomb.
He couldn't possibly ignore such an obvious display. With a disgruntled sigh, he set his basket down, pocketing the receipt from one of the bags.
It wasn't long after the next customer stepped up to the register that the man at the door had closed the distance between the young woman and himself. He didn't much favor having to do this in such a public place, but at least it was a closed building in the middle of a city, and not some wide open field where the suspect could take off running in any such direction she pleased.
"Ma'am?" The man stopped just short of a respectful distance away, his closeness enough to make one want take just the smallest of steps back. Despite being off duty, he was obligated to carry certain things around with him at all times, and that include his identification badge, which he now flashed at the stranger. The badge, for all intents and purposes, appeared fairly similar to that of a police officer, its official stamp without question.
"Would you mind stepping outside?" His eyes cast sidelong to the customer ahead of her; he hadn't missed the other man's own reactions to the lady, but it had been nothing truly suspicious, so his gaze quickly returned to the suspect at hand.

Upon realizing that just about everyone in the store was staring at her, armed with phones and all, poor Olivia was far too terrified to know what to expect. It was only natural for someone to overreact to something they didn't understand, but from where she came from it wasn't all too common for mermaids or sirens to use their powers in such a way. It had surprised her because she herself had never done it before. Why, though, would everyone else be making such a fuss over someone using hydrokinesis? It made the cyan haired young woman rather confused.
You see, Olivia wasn't a stranger to this particular market since she went there all the time. That being said, she didn't really understand the law that had been put in place there in the entirety of the Sanctuary. Other people seemed to be aware of something that she wasn't, but what on Earth could that something be?
Olivia looked up to a rather familiar face as the same stranger that had bumped into her earlier seemed to greet her once again. The odd fellow made what seemed like a compliment to her singing voice! (At least, she'd hoped it was a compliment.) Golden eyes still peered around looking at various different eyes, either staring at her in confusion, astonishment, amazement, and she could have sworn she saw a glint of fear in some of their eyes. Either way, Olivia didn't feel at all good about this. Even so, it would hardly be right for her not to acknowledge a compliment... even if it wasn't so clear whether or not it was meant to be one. "Oh," she said quietly. "Um, well... thank you!"
What an odd fellow...
Once again, the nice stranger was ignored as Olivia was being approached by someone more serious, and a little too close for comfort. With a flash of his badge, Olivia knew instantly that he was some sort of figure of authority. Best for her not to cause him any sort of trouble. Olivia took the smallest of steps away from the man in discomfort. Still, dealing with a man of the law was rather intimidating. Whatever could be the reason he wanted to talk to her of all people? Olivia certainly wouldn't hurt anyone, nor did she know anyone who would. After all, she didn't really know anyone at all that was a friend.
Had she witnessed a crime being committed? Well, certainly not! Olivia would have remembered something like that, easily!
Still, once again, it was hardly a good idea to refuse a man of the law. "Um... okay." And the clueless young mermaid hybrid followed him outside with zero resistance. Letting in a gulp, mostly from being incapable of anticipating what would happen, Olivia tried her best to settle her aching nerves. "Um, so, what is it that you needed to talk to me about, Mr. Officer, sir?"

As the cashier yelled, Happy immediately turned back around, waddling up to the register. The woman beside it seemed to call out a 'thank you' in response to Happy's words; had she thought it a compliment? No, maybe she just didn't understand the entirety of the hesitance the half-gargoyle had tried to convey in its "confession." To be quite honest to itself, humans scared Happy; they were lifeless and directionless, always needing a reason to keep going. Their lifespans were short-lived and didn't have any meaning. The female seemed no different at first glance.
Realizing it had become distracted in its antagonizing thoughts, Happy simply laid the cookies on the belt and beamed up at the cashier, not saying anything about the commotion happening immediately behind them. The humanoid's cloudy grey eyes seemed to fixate fiercely at a spot near the conveyor belt as it heard the conversation unfold near it.
A sense of altruism washed over the being as the female followed the male— he was a face that most of the supernaturals knew well— a feeling it did not appreciate. The cameras flashing and clicking all throughout the nearby area gave it a feeling of suffocation, as if it was trapped between grounded reality and eternal "life" in a picture.
As soon as Happy paid, it contentedly grabbed the box of snacks and headed for the door; unfortunately for it, immediately outside was Olivia and the man. The feeling of altruism returned, and begrudgingly Happy waited nearby, wishing that its smile disappeared along with its own body.

Thankfully, the female did not put up a fight. Part of him relaxed slightly, but not wholly; there was still a chance that she might try something once she was further out of range from the crowd.
He allowed her to go ahead of him, following very close behind her, one hand prepared to latch onto her should she attempt to bolt. The parking lot outside the supermarket was large, suitable for its size, most of the cars clustered around the front. She didn't appear all that fast or strong, and he was confident that even if she managed to run off into the lot, he'd be to bring her down before she slipped into the surrounding streets.
His eyes remained focused on the young woman, allowing only the slightest of glances to his surroundings as they slipped out through the doors, phones still going off around them; he felt his own cell vibrate in his pocket, surely the notification of a suspected supernatural that had been photographed and texted to the authorities. Others would likely be on their way; all he had to do was contain the situation, notify them of the capture, and wait.
Moving slightly out of the way of the entrance, he continued to maintain a carefully approximated distance to her; close enough to grab her should she try to flee, far enough to dodge any attacks should he see them coming.
"Face the wall with your knees on the ground and your hands over your head," he instructed her, reaching one hand into his back pocket. The pocket was deep and bulged slightly, and out from it he began to pull a pair of handcuffs; they weren't the regular sort of metal locking cuffs a police officer might carry, but instead a pair of metal spheres bound by a thick, rope-like metal wire.
If the woman did as she was told, he would wrap the wire around both of her wrists, clicking the two spheres together, whereby something like a blue laser would fizz into life around the wire, automatically closing tight around her wrists as he would bring her arms down behind her back. One wrong move and he would emit a very particular sort of sharp whistle, whereby the laser would then slip tighter with an electronic hum, and she would experience a very painful, debilitating shock such as that from a taser.
As he did all of this, he heard the doors slide open to the other side of him. The footsteps of the customer did not continue on into the parking lot, however, and his eyes cast a quick glance to see the man who had been in front of her standing around nearby, watching with a smile on his face. The grin was a bit unnerving, and he couldn't quite tell whether the man was planning something or not; just in case, his free hand remained subtly within range of another of his trousers' pockets, fingers prepared to wrap around a concealed weapon therein.
"Move along, sir."

Olivia's eyebrows arched quite a bit as her face, which was not unusual for her. Because she had always been on her own, all Olivia could do to get by was assume things that she never really could totally confirm without the opinion of others. Why on Earth did this man want Olivia to kneel on the floor with hands on her head? He seemed very serious, too. Was he in trouble? Honestly, Olivia wasn't one hundred percent sure, but the pessimist in her made her believe that she was in big doo doo trouble.
Still, what good would resisting a man of the law do?
Nothing, that's what! She may not totally understand how things worked here, or anywhere (she lived in the water, and kept her groceries in durable bubbles), but wherever she went, Olivia was very much aware of the law enforcement. And the last thing she wanted to do was upset anyone. At all.
So, she simply did what she was told. Olivia turned to the wall, placing both of her hands over her head and kneeling down on the ground. What was this even for? Was it some kind of ritual? Maybe it was a good thing, but whatever it could mean simply slipped the poor young woman's mind!
The man of the law simply bounded her wrists with some sort of binding device, some kind of wires, around her wrists, and they weren't all that comfortable either. The man was definitely on a mission, and it didn't really have anything to do with being particularly nice to the little Siren hybrid. However, it didn't seem so bad when her arms were back down her back. Unfortunately, the bindings kept her arms from moving in front of her, but whatever the case, it was better than her arms being stuck on her head.
It simply amazed her that throughout this whole thing, Olivia never once asked the officer anything. Should she? Would that be a smart move? What if it angered him? Yet, that didn't really stop her from asking. Her curiosity did usually override her pessimism, or rather, her irrational fears. It didn't, however, override her common sense, her most prized feature.
Olivia gulped. "Um..." she spoke up in a timid whisper before clearing her throat and raising the volume of her voice to a normal level. "What are you doing?" Well, normal for her. It may still have seemed like a whisper to others.
Before Olivia's question could be answered, though, it seemed as though the officer's attention was on something, or rather someone, else. The same person, once again, seemed rather intrigued about whatever it was that was going on. The officer commanded the creature, human, or whatever it was, to move along. Olivia was really hoping it would listen. Honestly, she wasn't really all that much in the mood for any more confusion.

The man stared at the dawdling stranger for a few moments before turning back to the issue at hand. He supposed he couldn't prevent gawkers; it would be best if he just moved things along as quickly as possible.
Lifting one of his hands, he pushed a few buttons on what appeared to be a watch that he was wearing, meant to alert the authorities that he has apprehended the suspect they've just been notified of. He listened to the reply through a bud in one of his ears.
With a glance down at the woman, he told her, "You can get comfortable, miss, but you must not stand. An on-duty officer will be here soon to take you down to the station. He will inform you of the situation."
His heard turned, checking on the status of the man that had been standing to watch. Some other customers, as they left, offered glances their way, but otherwise went on their way.

Remaining utterly terrified, Olivia simply nodded and sat down on her knees, trying to be as comfortable as possible. She felt rather uncomfortable at all of the people that walked by and seemed to be interested in what was happening to her. She was told that she could make herself comfortable, but with her arms bound behind her back, this wouldn't be easy.
Olivia turned herself around so that her back was against the wall, golden eyes looking down onto the ground, feeling rather sorry for herself at this moment. It wasn't like she even did anything wrong, but at the same time why else would this man do this to her? Whatever the case, she was told that she would have answers somewhere else, so she decided it would be best to stay put any obey.
The other figure, though, seemed disinterested in listening to her warnings. The officer seemed disinterested in someone who's just standing there doing nothing, so it didn't seem to do him any harm. Still, the officer approached the strange figure, causing the mermaid siren hybrid to lower her head a little as her knees moved together nervously. Olivia certainly didn't want any trouble for this stranger because she seemed to do something wrong.

There would be some waiting. This report was not the most urgent of them now that it was contained, but also, there was a distinct interest in not causing the common people more alarm than was due.
Eventually and surely sleek silent vehicle drove near and stopped. It was aerodynamically designed, and looked like many other decent cars on the public market. The coat of paint on it was mundane, but the interior was outfitted like a police car.
The driver's side door opened. A muscular man with a three dimensional burn scar across the right side of his face and neck stepped out. Some of the mark was hidden by his police gear. He had a square jaw, and slight salt and pepper stubble wherever the burn did not prevent the hair from growing into a beard while the hair on his head was cut extremely short.
Dark hazel eyes looked down at the child sitting quietly against the wall. He nodded once, acknowledging the off-duty officer's work. This was indeed the one from the reports. He could tell with the glance at the girl that there was nothing phony about them.
"Get up. Into the car." He ordered in a flat voice, at the ready to grab the girl or command the cuffs to shock her if she caused any trouble on the way to the back passenger seat.
On the way he caught the watching 'boy' in his sights.
There was something wrong about that smiling face, and the eyes. It was on the uncanny valley in terms of human-like but not quite human enough.
Now was not the time to react further to that, but the officer certainly made note of it, adding the information to the growing report, and sending out a request for another on-duty officer to subtly investigate via technological mental enhancements. Happy was not on record for having done anything yet, but the suspicion was there to be looked into after this known supernatural incident with the aquatic hybrid was closed. cynda1

For reasons unbeknownst to Happy, even after the man told him to move along it stood there, acting as if it didn't hear the man. The behavior it expressed was not normal behavior for the being; it did good by the authorities, following the law in a way that if it didn't, something incredibly distressing would happen to it. Maybe Happy felt compelled to stick near the woman, maybe she was like it, an outcast in a place where the law was strict and didn't allow for leeway. One small mistake and it'd all be over for Happy. Mistakes were not something to be taken lightly; it was made clear years ago to the disguised creature.
Watching intensely at how naive Olivia seemed, following the other man's orders, Happy could see the confusion on her face. Did she not know how the law worked?
The gray-skinned humanoid's eyebrows wrinkled as it saw the authority figure's gaze return to him, the grin still stuck on his face as if it was simply an automatic reaction. However, it kept its stare away from the man, taking care not to make eye contact. Staying at the site where the woman was being arrested was surely suspicious, especially as other onlookers had already moved on, the surprise and mystery gone. Arrests happened often as the law was broken; many times it was simply a Sanctuary citizen, but there was the occasional invader, a supernatural or magical being that had smuggled its way into the Sanctuary.
Happy itself wasn't magical; in fact, the only thing separating it from simple humans was the fact that its skin was a smooth gray, and the smirk that was permanently etched into its face. Oh, and being part gargoyle, of course. Happy could never forget its stony side, one that had appeared in a time of its childhood where it had been a mere human. Yet, it still didn't belong in Sanctuary. The authorities did not appreciate anything different than a human, one made from blood and textured skin and bones.
A car approached. Happy's attention focused towards the man that stepped out of it; a Sanctuary authority. Most likely there to take the female away, a possibility of further questioning her and following up with the videos that were taken, and the strange phenomenon that occurred inside the store.
But the officer seemed to notice Happy. Its mouth twitched, the smile threatening to only burst wider with the feeling of insecurity and danger that the thing felt.
Why was Happy even there? Its thoughts returned to the reason why it was even standing near the wall, observing the female and the authorities. Was it to possibly help her? To sacrifice itself for the sake of saving the female from being persecuted, or possibly even killed? And for what? Happy wouldn't gain anything from that; it would simply be thrown somewhere, treated horribly and most likely never seeing the daylight again.
Happy's smile ebbed slightly, appearing more like an unnatural and uneasy smile one would give to a stranger walking by rather than its usual easy grin. It'd have to avoid the authorities. And yet ... it still wanted to help somehow. The conflicting emotions Happy felt only further confused it, the magnanimity there, but also a feeling of guilt.
