Under the city there were roads, semi-circular tunnels of smooth concrete.
They were lit from above, squarish green-blue panels integrated into the ceiling at regular intervals. So clean and so quiet that the place looked like something out of a sci-fi film.
Not even the drip of water one would expect from underground tunnels could be heard.
There were not many places to hide the walls were too smooth, the paths too well mapped, equipped with ultraviolet sensors, and motion sensors, and a hidden series of checkpoints
Except for one place. There, the tunnel system was under repair. It was behind walls and under tarps and security scanners but there was a way into the underground through the construction site.
The tunnels were too long to get daylight anywhere else.
Occasionally a silent motor, sounding no louder than a quiet computer indicated the coming of a sleek high tech vehicle. They were the size of cars, but reminiscent of giant beetles with shining curved backs looking almost as if they hid wings.
Fortunately these were few and far between.
Get past the tunnel network, and all to be seen was a low roofed room, connecting several tunnels, but possessing no prominent features to indicate the lay of the land.
A part of the floor moved, down and down and down, but only for certified persons and vehicles.
The change in lighting: utterly blinding. The night vision necessary in the tunnels above couldn't stand in the contrast.
The near absolute silence gone, replaced by noise of marching shoes and the whirr of robots.
Pristine cleanliness and precision in the architecture matched the style of the tunnels
The robots out numbered the people, sliding quickly from hall to hall with their preprogrammed work. A projected screen issued out information behind an an android at a desk. It looked more like a list of flight times at an airport than any other sort of information.
Naturally, there could be no airports underground.
No maps were provided while the uniformity of the halls and rooms beyond the desk and the maze-like placement made getting lost quite likely.
The absence of defining information about rooms and sections from outside of their doors was uncanny, but once deeper inside there was much to see.
One wing held transparent chambers that defied gravity, having contents such as rats floating as if in outer space.
In another energy weapons were being tested and improved.
In others human and animal suspects sported strange add ons and mutations, ranging from cyborg parts, to having no fur, transparent skin and glow in the dark organs. Some were truly horrific mongrels of science. Something about many of them indicated sentience had somehow been removed if it had ever existed at all.
And finally there were the supernatural research wings.
The chambers were largely isolationist, carefully crafted based on the powers and abilities of each subject. Electricity, drugs, bars and even the powers of beings in other channeled to nullify abilities of those captive were in play to keep each creature in line. Rooms were part prison, part lab, allowing scientists access to the tools necessary to study or torture the subjects with ease.
Cooperative subjects had it a little better. If human enough, they may have access to a book or recreation, or even be allowed human contact in carefully controlled conditions. Beast kind did not have that luxury, even those capable of human speech.
In a cell, large enough to hold her massive form, Shika was kept. She was usually heavily drugged, too drugged to shift forms to give herself more space or escape her bonds on her own. She could walk in a circle if she held herself carefully, but barely had space for that.
The cage was double, with an inner and an outer layer. It lacked a visible door.
In the research area of the room, there were computers and all sorts of tools for taking measurements and samples.
It was unusually cluttered, as if someone had left in a hurry.

It had taken Lucky days and a lot of luck, but he finally found a way into an underground research lab. Based on his scouting of the city above and luck, he was able to determine that this was a very likely place that Shika was being held at. Although his mind wasn't fully focused, as fear was very prevalent in his mind. This lab reminded of him when he was experimented on, remembering the drugs, chemicals, and experiments they did on him. However, he had to keep the fear out of his mind for his goal to find Shika, not wanting her to experience the same thing he did, knowing full well how much she didn't like things like this.
He was currently in a side room in what he guessed was the supernatural research wing, thinking that this was a good start. He had been in here for about an hour, waiting for either information or an opening for him to use to move further in. However, despite his luck, it wasn't easy to get this. However, once he pieced together that a patrol robot was gone, he made his way down the hall. He stuck to the shadows and darkness to give his black fur camouflage as he entered another side room. This one had a computer in it, and no one inside. Once he saw the coast was clear, he made his way to the computer, hoping this would give him information on Shika and this place in general.

The computer bore a label, written in all caps.
ESP-CON-78
Luck be blessed, the computer was already on, it's screen glowing with a soft blue light.
a program was running, spitting out a graph of correlated data points marked on a chart. None were obviously representative of shika. It seemed to be looking at the responses to tests regarding a few similar subjects being run in real time. Below the screen sported out several thumbnail videos of what seemed to be birds, like owls but far more colorful in identical containment devices. Fortunately there was no sound attached to the monitor. The birds certainly looked pained in a way humans would mostly fail to observe.
Hidden on the drive were numbered folders. There was no data regarding the contents of each one except for the numbers which named each one.
100-78 200-78 300-78 And so on. Clicking on any one would reveal that it was password protected as a entry box appeared in the middle of the screen.
Of course the computer had plenty that could be accessed without a password. If Lucky had any skill with computers he might be able to find a relevant document, however it would be far less detailed than the protected files.

Lucky smiled when he saw that the computer was on. He began to click on the documents, knowing how computers worked from when he lived with humans and seeing them use them all the time. He clicked on each document one by one, until soon he tried to open up a search tab to search for Shika.

The search terms used could make or break the search. Naturally using the name shika would fail, for shika was not referenced by name here. Subjects were named by numerical code as was shone in one of the openable documents. File names themselves were often number and letter codes, making it hard to tell the contents without opening the doccuments.
Finally a spreadsheet came up titled ESP-78-B listing subject numbers and information in a chart like manner.
157-78 | green | mammal | 3lbs l Empath Etc. there were more to the entries but much of it was in high scientific language.
Six of the entries could have been shika reading. 221-78 | Orange | mammal | F | 2940kg | Hydro-Kinesis | Polymorph 457-78 | Red | mammal | F | 5021kg | Tele-Transport | Polymorph | Geo-Kinesis | Hydro-Kinesis 569-78 | Red | mammal | F | 2009kg | Hypno-Kinesis | Photo-Kinesis | hyperspeed 790-78 | Orange | mammal | F | 4987kg | Geo-Kinesis | Bota-Kinesis | Hydro-Kinesis 807-78 | Red | mammal | F | 3790kg | Photo-Kinesis | hyperspeed | Astro-Kinesis 1902-78 | Red | Mammal | F | 3780kg | Tele-Kinesis | Telepathy | Empathy

Lucky did find the spreadsheet and began to try to find their description on Shika, hoping to use this to get the ID number that this was using to find out where in specific she was at. After reading things over, this caught his eye:
790-78 | Orange | mammal | F | 4987kg | Geo-Kinesis | Bota-Kinesis | Hydro-Kinesis
He figured that this was likely Shika, and decided to look up where it was to see if he was right.

Looking up subject 790-78 lead to several files, the one with the most information was the restricted-entry file on the subject which was password protected.
Fortunately one of the files which was not password protected included an image.
The creature portrayed in the image file looked like a mammoth from ages past, covered with kelp-like shaggy blue-green fur, which tapered to white on the feet. It showed evidence of having once had tusks, but those were missing now.
guess the colors listed in did not refer to appearance.

Lucky doubted he could release their cage from here to cause panic, so he decided to try next:
457-78 | Red | mammal | F | 5021kg | Tele-Transport | Physio-Kinesis | Geo-Kinesis | Hydro-Kinesis

Though files for subject 457-78 appeared, none included a photograph to clarify it was right at a glance. One simple written document read.
'Subject 457-78 is proving resistant to the normal sedatives. Gains immunity within 5 days of use. Without sedatives, Subject proves quite vicious. Benzos is being tried to see if it will last longer than the previous medications.
DNA tests detect unmistakable tiger DNA presence, although this is heavily mutated.
Tests lead us to believe that Lasers will be necessary to remove subject's horns, claws, and perhaps teeth as well If the sedatives continue to fail. The material is comparable to diamonds, but is a blueish hue. An appropriate machine has been commissioned from tech.

Lucky sighed. He had no way of knowing if this was Shika or not. However, given the previous one was false, and the info he read seemed to match up to Shika, he had to go with this, having no choice. He tried to look up any locations in the facility for this subject.

Locational information was largely absent from the view-able documents. The closest information read.
78-H Large carnivores.
but the trend of a lack of room adornment to identify rooms from the hall stood firm. Even with a number or address, the place did not provide enough information to identify a room number on sight.
but the robots would know. there had to be some means by which they navigated this maze like place.
speaking of robots, one was coming back now.

Lucky soon heard what sounded like a robot coming. They might be his ticket to find Shika and hopefully free her and get her out of here. He hid somewhere where he was hidden and out of sight for the robot, waiting for them to pass before he would tail them.

The robot paused, doing a quick check over the room where Lucky was hiding. No one was in sight of its scanners thankfully, though the video cameras in the room had recorded some suspicious activity. Seeing no one, it glided on it's way, down the brightly lit unadorned hall.

Seeing the robot move on, Lucky began to tail the robot, hoping that it would take him along the way to the room he needed to be so he could try to work his magic in there.

The patrol bot traveled at a steady pace, following the hall where it turned, but not veering into any of the label-less doors for a while. Eventually it stopped at one. Through silent bidding the door slid open electronically and the robot entered, revealing another hall. this one was slightly on the more dimply lit side and wider, looking more like a place a large animal could have been fit through. There were scents in the hall, places where beasts may have recently tread. There was also the strong smell of medicines. The robot did not enter any of the rooms however. It just went down one length of the hall, then up the other. When it turned, it might spot Lucky cause without going through any of the doors embedded in the space, there wasn't any clear hiding places.
